I realized that we did not know where the Reiss home was, and so, I needed to ask around back at our house for someone to find an address for me. While we waited, a note arrived from Torrie, who had wanted to apologize for her abrupt exit with Mr. Reiss. She also begged us not to go and speak with his mother, as she feared that her learning anything about Torrie would surely only backfire and lead her to convince Mr. Reiss to break off their relationship.
It frustrated me that she could not seem to make up her mind about what she really wanted, except that she wanted to keep everyone happy, including herself. She wanted to keep Mr. Reiss around, but I knew full well that she would not reprove Mr. Walsh if he were to show up at her door.
âDo you still wish to go?â Joan asked.
I hesitated for only a moment. âShe may be angry with us now, but when we manage to get to the bottom of this nightmare for her, she will no longer question us.â
Joan gave me a look that told me she didnât know if she entirely believed me, but she followed me out through the door all the same.
The Reiss home sat overlooking Central Park, in a rather prestigious part of the city. Joan sneered something about how she was no longer surprised that he had not known our family name, but that mattered little to me. This meant that my plan would probably work all the better, as long as I did not allow myself to become frustrated too easily.
We made our way up to the front doors of a handsome rowhouse with ebony windows, marble details around the door, and wrought iron fencing protecting the bottom window boxes. The front door had been painted black just as all the neighboring doors all the way down the row had. It gleamed as if it had just been polished, with a golden number plate glinting just below the knocker in the shape of a lionâs head. I hesitated as I reached up to take hold of it, uncertain.
âWhatâs the matter?â Joan asked.
âAll of a sudden, Iâm not so sureâ¦â I said. Despite the warmth of the day, eerie shivers raced up the length of my spine. Something doesnât seem quite rightâ¦I realized.
âShould we go, then?â Joan asked.
âI donât know,â I said. âI feel almost as if we are in the wrong place, as if we have been greatly misled in some fashion.â
Joanâs face paled slightly. âWhatever has given you this feeling?â
I did not know precisely how to answer. In truth, it was nothing more than that; a feeling. Yet throughout all the investigations I had been a part of, this same feeling had made itself known repeatedly. âPerhaps Miles would call this intuitionâ¦â I said. âBut I am not yet familiar with it enough to count on it. Besides, feelings are fickle. While it is good to trust oneâs instincts, there are times when something outside ourselves can lead us astray.
