CHAPTER ELEVEN

Since Daisy had returned to Willow Creek, the Rainbow Flamingo was the dress shop where she shopped for special-occasion clothes. Today, however, she wasn’t here for special clothes but for something else. She had a meeting with the seamstress, who was going to sew costumes of a sort for her staff for the Alice in Wonderland Tea.

The Rainbow Flamingo was within easy walking distance from the tea garden. In the late afternoon, she and Iris headed that way to keep an appointment with the seamstress.

As they approached the shop, Iris said to Daisy, “You didn’t need me to come along. You can make these decisions.”

“I know, but this is a little different, and I wanted your opinion.”

“It’s nice for someone to want my opinion,” Iris teased.

Daisy pulled open the door, and they stepped inside the shop. It wasn’t a store that was stuffed to the walls. There were coordinates on racks, dresses on another. Special-occasion dresses hung on a rod near the dressing rooms.

Heidi Korn, who was now the owner of the clothes shop, came around the counter to meet them with a huge smile. Heidi often changed her hair color. They had seen it three different shades since she’d moved to Willow Creek. Now she was a platinum blonde with dark brows. She caught Daisy studying her. She joked, “Just love it?” Her hair was now chin-length and angled. “Is it true blondes have more fun? You would know, Daisy, right?”

“Heidi Korn, you get more outrageous every time I talk to you,” Iris said, in a chastising voice.

Heidi laughed. “Oh, come on, Iris. You know Daisy is fun in her own way, and it’s always whole-some.”

In a way, Daisy admired Heidi. She studied the woman’s sparkly silver manicured nails, her formfitting cranberry-colored dress and five-inch spiked heels, jeweled around the toes. Heidi was Heidi, and she did have a good sense of taste, at least where her customers were concerned.

“Greta is waiting for you, and I can’t wait to see what you think of her sketches. I know you had a long discussion with her to tell her what you wanted, and I think she’s done that in the most simple way possible. Simple in a good way.”

Daisy was always conscious of expenses, and even though she wanted these special touches for the Alice in Wonderland Tea, she was also very aware of the cost.

“Go on back,” Heidi said, motioning behind the counter and down a hall. “Greta had some alteration requests, and she was working on those, but she’s ready to help you.”

Iris and Daisy walked single file down a hall past the dressing rooms. In the alteration room, there were two sewing machines, dress forms, walls studded with buttons, rickrack, and trims. Greta was sitting at an artist’s table, a charcoal pencil in hand as she studied a design.

Her stool swiveled toward Daisy and she grinned. “Daisy, I have so much to show you.”

Greta was a short woman, about five feet tall. She had close-cropped silver hair in a pixie cut.
