Chapter 14
Mother knew exactly where she wanted to take me that afternoon, which surprised me a bit. I was even more shocked to find that her favorite shop in Savannah, Peaches Boutique, still stood right where Mother remembered it. The third thing I hadnât expected was the shop to be open on a Sunday. But it was.
The day was sunny and warm, the slight crispness in the air the only hint of fall. I parked right in front of the shop. Before I could get out, Mother said, âDid you bring your crystals with you, dear?â
I blinked, searching my brain for what she could mean. âIâ¦no. Do you mean crystal earrings or what?â
Mother appeared as confused as I felt. âCrystals for spell casting. You know, stone magic.â
âOh, those. No. I donât have any.â
Mother waved a hand. âWe wonât worry about that now. Weâll have to talk about it on another visit.â
The idea of another visit made me smile.
Inside, it was immediately clear why this was Motherâs favorite place. Both the decor and the clothes were gorgeous. The walls were peach with cream-colored edges that resembled lace. The place had mirrors everywhere and crystal chandeliers the light bounced off, making everything shimmer with rainbow colors.
âHello, and welcome.â A woman who looked to be in her late thirties sat on a stool behind the checkout counter. âLet me know if you need help.â She returned her attention to a fashion magazine in front of her.
As usual, all the clothing choices seemed overwhelming. Iâd taken to ordering my clothes online and sending them back when they didnât fit. Which was often.
Mother, on the other hand, seemed like the proverbial kid in a candy store if the candy had been covered in fabric. âI want to buy you a new dress and shoes to replace the clothes that got ruined the other day in the dumpster,â Mother said.
I took a quick glance over my shoulder to see if the saleswoman had heard the dumpster comment. It was pretty evident she had by the way her eyes widened then quickly return to the magazine pages. I gave Mother a sharp look that she appeared to register correctly.
She whispered, âI could do with a new dress as well.â
Of course, I wouldnât have cared if that comment had been overheard. We headed for the dress section, which sported so many lovely options my brain could barely take them in all at once. Mother was like a heat-seeking missile, reaching in and pulling out options for herself with lightning speed. Then she began shoving hangers at me, mumbling things like, âThis will bring out your eyes,â and, âthis dress was made for your build.â
After a moment, I relaxed and accepted the dresses, deciding she probably had a better eye for such things than I did.
When she was satisfied I had enough to try on, Mother turned to me, making sure the saleswoman was out of earshot. âNow that we have some clothes to choose from, itâs time for the second purpose of our little outing.
