Chapter 12

Even though I’d been told the festival was huge, I hadn’t been prepared for how massive it was. The two farms that hosted it were bursting with activities and vendors. Pumpkins and cornstalks had been placed in attractive arrangements that people could take pictures next to. There were rows and rows of booths selling everything from food to jewelry to 3D-printed items.

I left Livy to sell the muffins and walked around, searching for a familiar face. I was still annoyed that I hadn’t thought fast enough when I saw Patrick. He’d smiled at me through the window, and I froze. By the time I had the door opened, he was gone. I was almost sure Patrick was up to no good. The smile he’d given me had been anything but friendly. I’d called Jett, but he hadn’t been able to find him.

Boyd went riding by on his electric bike. He backtracked when he saw me and climbed off. He pulled off his green helmet and held it at his side. “Hey, we match!” he said, pointing at his orange pumpkin sweater.

I grinned. I was wearing a plain green long-sleeved shirt. “You have a strange idea of matching.”

“Your necklace.”

I wore a pumpkin necklace. “Oh, I see. That seems like a stretch.”

“Why are you wandering around alone? Festivals are meant to be enjoyed with family and friends.”

“You’re the first person I recognized.”

“Have you been in the maze yet?”

“No. I don’t really want to go in alone.”

“I would go with you, but I got so lost the last time I went in that it took me hours to get out. My legs aren’t up for that.”

“I’m sure there are other fun things.”

“I saw Darcy and the queen at the petting zoo. They have some cute baby goats.”

“I didn’t think Darcy would be here.”

“She’s scanning the crowd. I think she’s hoping Patrick shows up.”

“Where are you off to?”

Boyd grinned. “The kissing booth, of course.”

I laughed. “And who is running that?”

“Barbra and her pals.”

“I need to see that.”

“They do it every year. It’s become a bit of a joke between me and those ladies. They always refuse to let me participate, but I’m not giving up.”

“Who are you hoping to kiss?”

He winked at me. “I thought you were the detective here?”

I narrowed my eyes and tried to think. “I’m sure it isn’t Opal. My money is on Barbra.”

His eyes twinkled, and he laughed. “I’ve had my eye on Barbra since we were in our early sixties.”

“How did I miss it?”

“Because you’re too busy checking out the sheriff to see what everyone else is about.”

I slapped him playfully on the arm. “You are horrible. I’m not checking out the sheriff.”

“Maybe not this very moment, but I suspect that’s because you don’t know where he is.”

“You have to stop teasing me about him. He’s going to hear you one of these times.”

He chuckled. “He wouldn’t be surprised. Don’t you think I probably tease him when you aren’t around?”

My cheeks felt warm. “You better not.” My eyes rested on a figure moving toward the corn maze, and I took a sharp breath.
