Chapter 19
Itâs the scarf! The exact same scarf as the one you found down by the dock!â Becca exclaimed. âDidnât you see it?â
âYeah, it looks like the same one, but that scarf is under surveillance down at the Blue Lobstah, remember?â Kinsley reminded her as she gathered the saltwater taffy that had fallen to the sidewalk. She dried it off by brushing it against her coat before placing it back inside of the bucket.
âYes, but one of us needs to go after that person and find out where they purchased it. And quick, because theyâre getting too far away!â
That got Kinsleyâs attention. Becca was right. If they found out where they purchased the scarf, or which shop was selling them, maybe they could narrow things down a bit. âI hadnât thought of that. Good call.â
âYou go,â Becca said with a slight shove toward the edge of the sidewalk. âIâll stay here with the kettle.â
âAre you sure?â
âYes! And hurry! Our target just turned down Maple Street.â Becca pointed to a side street that led to only a parking lot.
Kinsley handed off the bucket of saltwater taffy to Becca and darted off in the same direction as the person who had disappeared. She quickly looked both ways and had to wait for two cars to pass, before sprinting across Main Street. When she finally made it across, a tall gentleman who had just stepped out of the town hall smacked right into her, causing her to lose her balance on the snow-covered sidewalk and topple to the ground.
âHeavens!â the man exclaimed, helping to her feet. âAre you okay?â
âIâll be fine.â Kinsley didnât recognize the older gentleman, but the biggest thing hurt was her ego, as a small crowd was quickly forming around them. She wiped the snow from her backside to show that she was not injured.
âDo we need to call a doctor?â someone asked. âOr dial 911?â
âNo. Iâm okayâIâm fine, really. Thank you, everyone,â she said, waving the concerned citizens along. âGotta go,â she said to the crowd before limping away.
Kinsley searched for her target, but the person had already disappeared around the brick building. She hobbled toward Maple Street and as soon as she reached the edge of the sidewalk, her head swung right and left, but the person had simply vanished. Just as she was about to give up, she noticed someone in the adjacent parking lot pop their head out from the trunk of a car and proceed to dust the snow off the car with an ice scraper. He or she was wearing the scarf! She darted over to the car and exclaimed, âExcuse me!â
The person turned and smiled.
âJackie? Is that you?â Kinsley asked, moving closer to get a better view.
âHey, Kinsley, how you doinâ?â Jackie adjusted the hood of her parka so her eyes could be fully seen beneath the fur lining of her thick coat. âCold out here, isnât it? This weather has me wanting to stay home with a hot cider by the fireplace.
