Mona rushed into Lord Farley’s arms. “Hold me. Hold me as though you’ll never let go.”

“Happily,” Robert said, cupping his arms around Mona. “Now. Now. What’s this about? Look, you’ve got Chloe upset. Quit whining, Chloe. Your mistress is just having a little nervous breakdown. Tell me all your woes.” He led Mona over to a couch.

“I feel so foolish.”

“What about?”

“Several minutes ago, I had this overwhelming feeling of dread. It was like I couldn’t breathe. The only thing I could think of was to get to you.”

Robert pulled Mona close and pressed his cheek against hers. “I know the feeling. You were just experiencing a little whoopsy.”

“A whoopsy?”

“It’s my made-up word for oops and what-the-hell! It sneaks up on you when you least expect it and then POW! You got a whoopsy. Kind of buckles your knees, doesn’t it?”

“Is this what you’ve been experiencing since the war, Robert? You got the whoopsies?”

“It’s why I drank. The whoopsies are not very pleasant.”

“No, they’re not. I thought I was strong, but—.”

“Stop right there. Don’t start doubting yourself, Mona. You are strong. You’ve done more for this community in a year than anyone else has in ten. You’ve given people a chance to finish their schooling, fed people who were hungry, given funding to various charities, kept your employees working with a fair wage. No one has been laid off from Mooncrest Farm or Mooncrest Enterprises since you took over the reins. Do you know what an accomplishment that is during this economic turndown. You’ve kept families intact. You have really contributed, while I have played the ponies and chased amusement where I can.”

“Robert, that’s not true. You saved Lady Alice’s estate for her, and you’ve saved my life on more than one occasion.”

“And you have saved mine.”

“Makes us even, then.” Mona leaned against Robert, pondering. “Will we always have the whoopsies? Everything is happening so fast.”

“I’m afraid so, my darling, but isn’t it nice to lean on someone who understands?”

Chloe leapt upon the couch and snuggled, poking her snout under Mona’s hand.

Mona laughed and petted Chloe. “I’ve got two good friends to save me from the whoopsies.”

Robert kissed Mona’s forehead. “You gonna marry me, Blondie?”

“I think so.”

“When?”

“This time next year we’ll be wed.”

“I won’t disappoint you, Mona. I know you may be my last chance for happiness.”

“And you, mine.”

Mona and Robert wrapped their arms around each other and just as their kissing became heated, the housekeeper appeared with a tray of coffee. Chloe growled as Robert chuckled when he noticed Mona blushing. “If you would let me announce our engagement, then people catching us snogging wouldn’t find it so risqué.”

“Don’t your servants knock before entering, and please quit using that word snogging? It sounds like a noise a pig would make.”

Robert grinned and snorted, much to Mona’s dismay. “Come on. Have some coffee. You look like you need something hot, and you can tell me what happened.” Robert poured a cup for Mona which she accepted gratefully.

“I had gone to Beulah Bradley’s funeral and left Violet and Dotty with Elspeth to help.
