Mona and a Pinkerton man entered Dr. Driscoll’s office, announcing their presence. Roaming through the many rooms, they found the man in his private quarters at the back of the building packing a suitcase.

Dr. Driscoll looked up in surprise and drew back in fear with his light-colored eyes casting a frosty pall. “Who are you?”

Mona glanced at the open suitcase lying on the bed. “I’m sorry, Dr. Driscoll. We knocked and called out, but no one answered.” She turned to her guard and motioned for him to leave. He quietly closed the bedroom door.

Seeing that Dr. Driscoll was still suspicious, Mona spied a rickety chair in the corner and sat in it. “I wish to speak with you, Dr. Driscoll.”

Driscoll threw some socks into his suitcase before facing Mona. “You must be Mona Moon. I heard you were coming today. I was going to ask one of your men for a ride out of this pesthole.”

“I’d be more than happy to oblige if that is what you want, Dr. Driscoll.”

“Good. Good. Yes, it is what I want.”

Mona watched Driscoll fold shirts. “You seem agitated, Doctor.”

“You think?”

“Doctor, could you stop packing and speak with me? Please take a breather and sit on the bed. Please.”

Reluctantly, Driscoll sat down on the edge of the bed facing Mona. “Listen, I tendered my resignation last month. If Montrose didn’t get a replacement, that’s your problem.”

“Dr. Driscoll, I recognize fear when I see it. You just about had a heart attack when we walked in. Can you please share why you are so skittish?”

“Share with you? Ah, lady, don’t play dumb. I’m leaving and I won’t tell a soul.”

“You won’t tell a soul what?”

Driscoll looked intently at Mona. “You seem oddly familiar, but I know we haven’t met. It’s your voice mostly.”

“You actually met me not long ago. I came to see you as Mrs. Maplewood.”

Driscoll snapped his fingers. “That’s it. So you were spying on me even then.”

Mona barked, “Don’t be so self-important, Doctor. I didn’t even know you existed until I met you.”

Driscoll drew back and looked disappointed. “Really? You didn’t come to spy on me?”

“I came incognito to inspect the conditions of the mine and Mooncrest Village. That’s all. Now I’m back in an official capacity as owner of this enterprise. If I am to make changes that will benefit the mine and the miners, I need to have knowledge. Tell me what you know, Dr. Driscoll.”

Driscoll pushed back his brown hair which had flopped onto his brow. Reaching into a pocket of his suitcase, he pulled out letters and thrust them at Mona. “Here you go.”

Mona gingerly took them and pulled letters out of the envelopes. She read letter after letter. “Good lord! These are all death threats!”

“Yes, they are.”

“Why would you be receiving death threats?”

“I saw too much and made the connections.”

Mona encouraged, “Did it have to do with the murder of Piotr Wojcik?”

Driscoll nodded.

“Tell me, sir, all you know.”

“I’m a man of science. I believe in facts.”

Mona nodded, wishing Driscoll would get to the point.
