Chapter 16

The next day, I was in my kitchen reviewing my calendar and making notes, when someone rapped at the back door. I called out, “It’s open.”

Arianna strolled in. “I know it’s early, but I wanted to catch you before you went to work.”

“Would you like coffee?”

She nodded.

“Cream and sugar?”

“A teaspoon of cream, no sugar.” She ambled to the window seat. “You have such a pretty kitchen. I love window seats. And your cushion is so cheery.” She stroked the blue and red flower pattern.

I handed her a mug. Arianna’s makeup was artfully applied, and she was wearing a tight wool winter-white dress that complemented her complexion and her figure. Why does she always look so perfect?

“Thanks.” She took a sip and sighed. “I do like coffee.”

“Would you like to sit?”

“Yes.” She perched on a chair. “I have a favor to ask.”

My eyebrow rose.

“Drew’s car comes back from the shop today. They did a great job. You really have to look for the scratch and, even then, you can only see a slight imperfection.”

I sipped my coffee.

“We don’t have a garage. It would be terrible to leave it in the driveway and have it scratched again.”

I groaned under my breath. I know where this is going.

Jenny pounded down the stairs, screeching to a halt when she saw Arianna. “What are you doing here so early?”

Arianna stood to give her a hug. “I wanted to ask your mom if she’d let Drew and I park his car in her garage for a little while.”

“That’s a great idea. That way Dad doesn’t have to worry about his car getting scratched again. We have an extra door opener.” Jenny paused.

“Jenny, it’s a one car garage.”

“So?”

“Where am I going to park?”

“Your car’s old. It doesn’t have to be in a garage.” She turned to Arianna. “It’s just for a little while right?”

“Just till we figure out what we’re doing. It’d mean so much to us.”

I stood. “Two weeks. I’ll let him use the garage for two weeks. That should give you enough time to either come to a decision, or to make other arrangements. Jenny, grab the extra garage door opener for Arianna. I need to get to work.”

Arianna stood. “Thank you.”

I walked out the door, shaking my head. How do I let myself get talked into these things?

I texted Patty as I pounded the pavement to work. “You will not believe what I just agreed to.”

“Sounds like a story. Lunch?”

“Meet you at Delightful Bites at noon.”

Cheryl handed me my call list. “Don’t forget you have that meeting at ten.”

“Come in for a minute and shut the door.”

She sat, pen and pad at the ready. “What’s up?”

“I spoke with Jay last night. Tom was murdered.”

“Oh no.” Her hand went to her mouth. “Strangled, just like poor Jean. Who would do such a thing?”

“I intend to find out.”

She leaned forward. “You don’t think Melanie did it, do you?”

My eyes widened. “What would make you think that?”

“The insurance money. You have to admit it’s suspicious. She applied for the policy so recently.
