CHAPTER SIXTEEN
With loud noises still coming from behind the bookshop by burly men digging up the yard that evening, I was regretfully leaving Milton and Pearl in the apartment. The bookshop had closed for the day, and the sun would set soon. How long were those guys going to be out there? Would they keep working with spotlights once it was dark? That might make it difficult for humans and cats to sleep.
I gave each cat a few pats on the head. "Sorry guys. I'm meeting Janie at a restaurant. And they don't allow cats there."
Milton's whiskers drooped.
"You're right," I said, "it doesn't make sense why everyplace isn't like Words to Read By, where you two are always welcome."
Pearl pawed at my shoe and mewed.
"I know," I said, "I don't like it either. I'll try not to be gone too long, okay?"
Pearl turned and sat down, giving me a view of her furry, white back.
"Okay, Pearl, I get it. You're not happy."
Milton meowed and joined his sister in a solidified turning of the kitty posteriors.
With a sigh, I left the apartment, trudged through the bookstore, and got in my car that was parked half a block away. That usually didn't bother me since most places I went to were close enough to walk to. This time, I grumbled at the vehicles situated in the small parking area behind our yard that Aunt Betty and I normally used. As long as the yard was being dug up, we'd have to give right of way to the workers.
Even though I had to drive to A Taste of Rome, thankfully, it only took a few minutes to get there. When I found a parking space not far from the entrance, I pulled in, checking to see if Janie had arrived before me. I didn't see her car.
I strolled inside, glanced around, and when I still didn't find Janie, asked the waiter to seat me at a table near the front where I could watch the entrance from my seat.
I didn't come here often, usually saving it for special occasions, but Janie had talked me into joining her tonight for supper.
Not that I was complaining. I was getting tired of peanut butter sandwiches at home. I had the makings for salad from Annabelle's Market, and along with it, good intentions to eat some, but I tended to grab what was easy and fast. I'd do better in the future. At least that's what I told myself. But for this evening, it would be a treat to have someone else fix me a hot, delicious, extravaganza for the tastebuds.
The restaurant door opened, and Janie walked in. She squinted, as if allowing her eyes to adjust from the setting sun outside, then spotted me and smiled.
"Hey there," she said when she reached me. She sat opposite me and set her purse on the bench seat beside her. "Thanks for meeting me."
"It's not a problem. Glad to spend time with you. Is everything okay?"
She shrugged. "I guess as okay as things can be right now.
