I figured the first thing I had to do was to clear Cody's name. Without having the same knowledge as the sheriff did, I'd have to work off a few assumptions. I wished I knew the estimated time of death. I knew Cody was only on the premises until about ten o'clock, when he and Faith had headed to the airport for their redeye to Mexico. I knew Kyle was unable to be located by Miranda just after that period so, it was possible he'd been killed prior to Cody's departure. My first goal had to be to find out if Cody did indeed have the opportunity Sheriff Mitchell claimed he did. If he didn’t have the opportunity, then motive and means didn’t really matter.

Still, it was one thing for me to believe in his innocence and another to prove it. I decided to start with the wedding party. Aside from Faith, the groomsmen would have had eyes on Cody the most out of all the attendees. And I didn't have to rule out the whole night, just from the last time I'd seen Kyle alive until Cody's departure. If I could account for every minute of that time … well, then, we could declare Cody innocent. I wouldn’t exactly know who the killer was, but I’d be able to help his lawyers with reasonable doubt in a court of law. I called Quinn and David, the two men who had stood next to Kyle in the wedding lineup. They agreed to meet me at the local icehouse. I told them I'd buy them dinner for their time.

When I arrived at Old Settlers’, the smell of roasting brisket hit me and set my mouth to watering. I realized I hadn't eaten yet. There wasn't much of a line. I got a two-meat plate, brisket and ribs, with cream corn and coleslaw on the side. I ate quickly, wanting to be able to take notes when Quinn and David arrived.

They showed up in their letter jackets. Of course they did. They’d graduated eight years earlier, but they'd wear their football pride for the rest of their lives.

I quickly swiped at my face with a paper towel and waved at them, then stood to join them in line so I could pick up the tab, as promised.

“Hey guys, thanks for meeting me here.”

“No worries, Fancy. We’re happy to help,” Quinn said. They ordered—brisket sandwiches and slaw—and I moved in to swipe my card.

They wouldn't let me.

“Put that away, now,” David said with a gentle drawl.

I guess it went against their morals or something. No matter. I should have known. This was still Texas. I showed them to the table, their trays loaded, and we exchanged pleasantries for a few. We didn't have much in common besides the wedding, so it didn't take up too much time. Kyle and Cody were so different. It showed in Cody's jock friends. They were earnest, sweet, simple boys.

Thank God I'd never dated either of them. Then again, there was no reason for me to have done so.
