Chapter nine
Shadows of Chaos
Saturday 6th September: 6.30 am
Peter's heart raced with urgency. In his lounge, he swiftly restrained Lister with one hand and tried to operate his mobile with the other. His fingers, slippery with the sheen of exertion, danced across the screen, summoning police backup and Fitch with a succession of swift taps.
'Tell me, Lister!' Peter growled, not easing the pressure on the restrained man beneath him. 'What have you done to disrupt the wedding?'
Lister's chuckle was as infuriating as a wasp at a picnic. 'Oh, Peter, always so direct,' he taunted from his prone position. 'You really think I'd orchestrate someone's demise without a helping hand? There's nothing you can do to stop what will happen today.'
The threat hung between them like a cobweb in the corner of an otherwise pristine room. Lister stubbornly held onto his secrets, even under Peter's relentless questioning.
As if on cue, the cavalry arrived. Officers poured into the house with the efficiency of ants discovering a spilt spot of jam. They took Peter out of the wrestling match and cuffed Lister's wrists. The officers understood the situation and nodded with determined expressions. As they hauled Lister to his feet, Peter issued his commands with the solemnity of a captain addressing his crew.
'Keep your eyes glued to that man,' he ordered, pointing at Lister. 'He can be very manipulative. Do not speak to him. If he attempts to say anything to anyone, use your imagination within the law to stop him.'
Understanding the gravity of the situation, the officers nodded, their expressions serious. Lister left the house with all the pomp and circumstance of a fallen dignitary, his head held high despite his ignominious defeat.
'Take him straight to the station,' Peter continued, 'And throw the man in a cell. Not a word between you, hear? Silence is golden, especially with this one.'
The officers affirmed with curt nods, their silence already forming an impenetrable barrier around the master manipulator. The police van's doors slammed shut with a definitive thud, sealing Lister away from the world he sought to unsettle. As the vehicle retreated down the lane, its presence faded until only the birdsong remained, as though even the countryside exhaled in relief.
Peter watched the police van disappear around the bend, taking the enigmatic Lister with it. Despite the early hour, the day seemed to have already unfurled its fair share of chaos before most villagers had even stirred from their slumber.
As he stepped back into the house, Peter's mind raced through the events that had led to this moment. The threat of disruption loomed over the upcoming wedding. Lister's cryptic words only added to the sense of.
With a heavy sigh, Peter rubbed a hand over his tired face. He knew that there was still much to do to ensure the safety and success of the wedding.
Taking a deep breath, Peter squared his shoulders and turned his attention to the task at hand. With steely determination in his eyes. The moment was cool and sweet, but the taste of Lister's insinuations lingered, leaving a bitter note amidst the pastoral peace.
