DOWNSTAIRS, AFTER ORDERING DESSERT from Angela, Perillo made a reservation for two people on Saturday night. âGive him a hefty discount and Iâll make up for it.â
Angela wrote it down in her reservation book. âYou are full of surprises. I never thought a soft heart would be one of them.â
âCara Angela, when was the last time you were in love?â
Angela laughed. âWho remembers?â
NICO REACHED OVER THE table and gave Danieleâs arm a squeeze. He cared for this young man, felt close to him. âYour feelings, donât be afraid of them.â
âAfraid of what?â Perillo asked as he and OneWag reached the top of the stairs.
Daniele quickly stood up and walked across the room. âItâs my turn now,â he said as he took the tray with their desserts from his boss.
âThanks, Dani. I got a plate of cantuccini for Rocco and you, Nico. Also, three glasses of vin santo on the house.â Perillo sat down as Daniele slid the tray on the table and distributed the plates. âSo, afraid of what?â
Daniele threw a pleading look at Nico.
âAfraid we wonât solve the case,â Nico said.
Perillo looked up at his brigadiere. âHave faith, Dani. It might take a long time, but we will.â
âThat reminds me,â Nico said, âhave you talked to Beppe?â
âIf he has something to tell me, he should come to the station. Iâm not going to look for him. Heâs probably only trying to give himself importance.â
âMaybe, but he still should be heard,â Nico said. âHe wonât tell me. Beppe only wants to speak to the top man.â
âTo waste my time. I heard you, Nico. Weâll put Beppe on the list of people to talk to.â
âI think you also need to talk further with the owner of the hotel,â Nico added. âShe hired Cesare and Laura and might know something about them that we donât.â
Perillo widened his eyes at Nico. âMe? You are part of my investigative team.â
âWhy donât I talk to her?â Daniele offered. The owner lived in Florence.
âNo, Dani, Iâm sorry. From the harsh look on her portrait hanging in the lobby of the hotel, Signora Lucchetti strikes me as a difficult woman.â She had sounded perfectly nice on the phone, but he wanted Nico to go. âNico has years of experience behind him in getting people to reveal the contents of their closets or anyone elseâs.â Perillo lifted a spoon and dug it into the panna cotta. âLet us put murder aside and enjoy our desserts. They will give us sweet dreams.â
Nico looked at the small glass of vin santo. Sweet dreams and acid reflux.
