CHAPTER 13

Ramsey Puri owned a chain of restaurants called Persian Paradise. He’d made a name for himself cooking his mother and grandmother’s recipes that he’d learned during his childhood. The first restaurant had become a hit, and soon he’d opened more locations with the help of investors. Jake had learned all of this on the drive over, thanks to Al’s online search. Now they were heading to a coffee shop to meet with him.

“He didn’t seem too pleased that I was askin’ him to take time outta’ his day to meet with us,” Al said as they drove down a two-lane side street.

“Maybe because he doesn’t want us linking him to Niles Balderelli’s death,” Jake said. “I mean, think about how bad for business it could be to have someone sniffing around and linking you to a high-profile murder.”

“Guess so. Maybe that’s why he got so short with me,” Al conceded. “Still, I didn’t appreciate his tone.”

“Don’t let him get to you. We have a job to do.” Jake had noticed lately that Al had been a little less patient than he used to be. Jake wasn’t sure what had changed or if it was just a temporary thing, but he knew he’d have to keep an eye on his partner. However, he was also well aware that sometimes his short temper actually helped them out on cases. Kind of like a good cop, bad cop thing. Who knew? Maybe it was going to end up being a good thing for them.

“I won’t, but sometimes I jes’ get tired of people jerkin’ us around. Old habits start comin’ up fer me, and I jes’ wanna’ reach across the table sometimes and shake the truth outta ‘em.” He reached out with one hand and gripped the air before shaking his fist.

“As long as you don’t actually do that, we’re good,” Jake said with a grin as they pulled into the parking lot of the coffee shop.

“I won’t, but I can’t promise I ain’t gonna’ grumble and make him feel like I’m gonna’,” Al warned.

Jake grinned. “Well, who knows? Maybe that’s exactly the attitude we’re going to need.”

They parked and climbed out of the truck. As they approached the door to go inside, a man who was seated at an outdoor table called out. “Are you the private investigators?”

Al and Jake turned and saw a dark-complected man in light grey slacks and a deep blue shirt open at the neck sitting nearby with a cup in front of him. As he stretched out, he took up more space than seemed necessary in such close quarters.

“We are,” Jake said as he turned to him. “I’m Jake, and this is Al.”

Ramsey stood up. “Ramsey Puri. I would say it’s an honor, but considering the situation.” He shrugged as if what he’d just said wasn’t borderline rude. “Please, have a seat.”

Jake turned to look at Al whose jaw twitched, but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he pulled out a chair and silently sat down.

“I was
