Chapter 17

‘She is in love with Cristian, the waiter at Castelucci’s?’ Camille nodded. ‘But they are cousins?’

‘Yes. The family would never allow it.’

‘And what of Naomi Castelucci?’

‘She has always wanted Cristian, but he did not have any interest in her. Antonella says that her father and Naomi became engaged very quickly, a whirlwind romance, and she came to London to live with Santini and the family, and work in the restaurant.’

‘And Cristian too?’

‘Because his father’s cafes were failing in Palermo. He has an apartment near the restaurant.’

Richard nodded and stubbed out a cigarette in the ashtray. He lifted his chin and looked at Camille. ‘You understand I must interview Naomi Castelucci. It would have happened before, but her doctor said that she could not attend a police interview due to ill health.’

Camille frowned. ‘Was it Doctor Lewis?’

Richard nodded. ‘Yes, but obviously they cannot call on him to give them an excuse for obvious reasons.’

‘You think it was an excuse?’

‘I’ve heard it all before, Camille, the excuses, the reasons why such and such cannot possibly be expected to come to the station to ask questions. It’s usually poppycock.’

‘Do you think she killed Santini?’

‘She had a motive. She was in love with Cristian before she met Mr. Castelucci. She meets a wealthy man, becomes his wife, and then gets rid of him so she can be with her lover.’

‘Except Cristian was never her lover.’

‘And never likely to be all the time she was married to his uncle.’ Camille nodded, knowing he was right. ‘Can I drop you somewhere? I’m going to the Castelucci house to speak to Mrs Castelucci. If the mountain won’t come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain. I will get my interview whether she likes it or not. She’s doing herself no favours by trying to avoid me. She’s making herself look guilty, even if she isn’t. I wish people would understand that they cannot escape the police. An interview is inevitable. Santini Castelucci was her husband.’

‘I could come with you. I would like to check on Antonella. She has had a lot to deal with over the last few months.’
