Chapter 28

When Maya and Sandra escorted Anton back to the hotel room he was sharing with Ryan and marched through the door, Ryan popped to his feet from one of the double beds to greet them.

“What happened? Are you okay, Anton?”

“He’s fine,” Maya said gruffly before shoving Anton down in the chair next to the small desk with the leather-bound guest services book. “Now you listen to me, if I catch you even poking your head out that door, it’s over. I will bring a whole world of hurt down upon you, so don’t you dare test me.”

“I know a couple of Capitol Police officers who moonlight as security guards that I could post outside your door,” Sandra said.

“You don’t have to do that,” Anton tried assuring her. “I won’t try to sneak out again, I promise. You can trust me.”

“I don’t have to trust you because I’m counting on Ryan here to make sure you stick to your word, because if you don’t, then it’s on both of you,” Sandra explained calmly.

Ryan’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head. “What?”

“It’s like the old buddy system. You’re both responsible for each other. One screws up, you both pay the price,” Sandra said sharply.

“But I didn’t do anything wrong—” Ryan stopped short, catching himself, realizing that wasn’t quite true.

“This way, you’re both invested in playing by the rules, and speaking up if one of you gets any bright ideas to break them again.”

“Mom, will you please stop? Nobody’s going to break any more rules,” Ryan sighed.

There was a quiet knock at the door.

Ryan’s face fell as Maya crossed the room and opened it.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, startled to see her mother.

“It’s past curfew. You should be in your room.”

“I . . . uh . . . I . . .” Vanessa stammered, drawing a complete blank as to how to explain why she was there.

“If you keep your mouth shut, don’t say another word, and just turn back around and head straight to your room and don’t try to come back when we’re gone, I will pretend you were never here,” Maya said evenly.

Vanessa opened her mouth to speak, thought better of it, and then scooted away.

Maya leaned out the door and called after her, “Remember, these halls have security cameras!”

Sandra shot Ryan a hard look.

“We were just going to watch a movie together,” Ryan mumbled, looking at his mother sheepishly.

Sandra jabbed a finger in Anton’s direction. “Stay put.”

“Yes, Mrs. Wallage,” Anton whispered, contrite.

Then she walked over and joined Maya, who was staring down the hall, making sure Vanessa actually got on the elevator to go back to her room. As they stepped out into the hall and Sandra grabbed the door handle to swing it shut, she heard Anton ask, “What happens now?”

She poked her head back in the room. “What do you mean?”

“To me? I am seen on camera going into the building. Are the police going to take me in for questioning? Am I going to have
