I took an Uber back to my office. Before going in, I stopped at the deli two blocks away and ordered a turkey sandwich with coleslaw to go.

My phone rang as I was turning on the coffeemaker.

“Maddie Landon.”

“Maddie, this is Lucy Grainger. How are you?”

“Fine. I’m glad you called. I wanted to talk to you about something,” I said.

“I’m in the city for one night and I’d love to take you to dinner. I know it’s last minute, but I was hoping you didn’t have plans.”

“No. I can make it.”

“How about if I make a reservation at Café Fiorello for 6:30?” Lucy said.

“That’s perfect. I’ll see you then.”

I had questions I wanted to ask her about Brian Gates, the boy who may be my father. I was also curious why she didn’t mention that Lydia had told her parents she was raped. Was she hiding something?
