Frank had gone into the office Monday morning so he would have something to do while he waited for Sarah to report back on her mother’s news. Gino was also there, since they hadn’t been able to think of anything for either of them to do while Sarah and Maeve were investigating.

“Maybe we should go to see this attorney Breedlove hired,” Gino suggested when they’d returned from lunch after spending the morning writing up reports on what they had learned so far. Maeve could type them when she returned from her undercover tasks. “What’s his name?”

“Klein,” Frank said. “Why would we need to see him?”

“To find out what he’s planning to do.” They were in Frank’s office. Gino sat in one of the client chairs and had propped his feet up on Frank’s desk.

“I think we already know what he’s planning to do,” Frank said. “He wants to get Julia released from the asylum.”

Gino gave him a mock glare. “I know that, but the question is how. He might know things we don’t.”

“Things about Julia?”

“No, things about the law. He’s an attorney, after all. They always know a trick or two to get around the rules.”

“You mean they know ways to bend the law,” Frank said, not bothering to hide his contempt.

“It’s a skill that can come in handy,” Gino pointed out with a grin.

“Seems to me that Klein should be contacting us to find out what we know. He’s going to need all the help he can get to see Julia released.”

“Unless he knows something we don’t,” Gino said.

From what Frank had heard about Klein, he probably did know at least a dozen ways to bend the law, but did he know enough facts about Julia? Frank was seriously considering contacting the attorney when they heard the main office door open.

Gino quickly removed his feet from Frank’s desk and jumped up. He hurried out to greet their visitor.

“May I help you?” Gino asked.

Frank couldn’t see who had come in, but he recognized the voice that replied. “Is Mr. Malloy in?”

Frank was on his feet in an instant and hurrying to his office door.

“May I tell him who’s calling?” Gino asked as he had been instructed, but Frank was in the outer office now.

“Dr. Ziegler,” he said by way of greeting. “How can I help you?”

The good doctor looked a bit harried. He’d pulled off his hat and not bothered to smooth down his hair. His suit was wrinkled, and his shirt collar a bit limp. But then he hadn’t looked exactly neat when Frank and Sarah had visited him in his own office either. “I need to speak with you, Mr. Malloy.” He glanced at Gino, who was watching the exchange with great interest. “In private.”

“Of course. Right this way.” He gave Gino a glance that silently told him not to ask any questions and escorted Ziegler into his office.

The doctor took the chair Gino had vacated and Frank closed the door to give them the privacy Ziegler had requested.
