Frank had gone into the office Monday morning so he would have something to do while he waited for Sarah to report back on her motherâs news. Gino was also there, since they hadnât been able to think of anything for either of them to do while Sarah and Maeve were investigating.
âMaybe we should go to see this attorney Breedlove hired,â Gino suggested when theyâd returned from lunch after spending the morning writing up reports on what they had learned so far. Maeve could type them when she returned from her undercover tasks. âWhatâs his name?â
âKlein,â Frank said. âWhy would we need to see him?â
âTo find out what heâs planning to do.â They were in Frankâs office. Gino sat in one of the client chairs and had propped his feet up on Frankâs desk.
âI think we already know what heâs planning to do,â Frank said. âHe wants to get Julia released from the asylum.â
Gino gave him a mock glare. âI know that, but the question is how. He might know things we donât.â
âThings about Julia?â
âNo, things about the law. Heâs an attorney, after all. They always know a trick or two to get around the rules.â
âYou mean they know ways to bend the law,â Frank said, not bothering to hide his contempt.
âItâs a skill that can come in handy,â Gino pointed out with a grin.
âSeems to me that Klein should be contacting us to find out what we know. Heâs going to need all the help he can get to see Julia released.â
âUnless he knows something we donât,â Gino said.
From what Frank had heard about Klein, he probably did know at least a dozen ways to bend the law, but did he know enough facts about Julia? Frank was seriously considering contacting the attorney when they heard the main office door open.
Gino quickly removed his feet from Frankâs desk and jumped up. He hurried out to greet their visitor.
âMay I help you?â Gino asked.
Frank couldnât see who had come in, but he recognized the voice that replied. âIs Mr. Malloy in?â
Frank was on his feet in an instant and hurrying to his office door.
âMay I tell him whoâs calling?â Gino asked as he had been instructed, but Frank was in the outer office now.
âDr. Ziegler,â he said by way of greeting. âHow can I help you?â
The good doctor looked a bit harried. Heâd pulled off his hat and not bothered to smooth down his hair. His suit was wrinkled, and his shirt collar a bit limp. But then he hadnât looked exactly neat when Frank and Sarah had visited him in his own office either. âI need to speak with you, Mr. Malloy.â He glanced at Gino, who was watching the exchange with great interest. âIn private.â
âOf course. Right this way.â He gave Gino a glance that silently told him not to ask any questions and escorted Ziegler into his office.
The doctor took the chair Gino had vacated and Frank closed the door to give them the privacy Ziegler had requested.
