EIGHTEEN

While working on the farm in the morning, I made sure to check for security cameras on Callum’s cabin, the barn, and the other outbuildings. I didn’t spot a single one. I fed the chickens, cleaned out stalls, and then got to work grooming the donkeys. Callum wasn’t far away. I could see him fixing a section of fencing.

He finished up and headed over my way as I was combing Hamish the donkey’s mane.

‘Need help with anything?’ Callum asked as he ran a hand along Hamish’s back.

‘I’m fine,’ I assured him. ‘I’m almost done here.’

‘I’ll be in the barn then.’ He gave Hamish a pat. ‘I need to fix one of the stall doors.’

‘Callum,’ I said to stop him before he could leave. I tried to keep my voice casual so he wouldn’t think I was harboring any suspicions about him. ‘I couldn’t help noticing that you had boxes for security cameras in your cabin. Are the cameras for the farm? Because I haven’t seen any around.’

He hesitated for a split second before answering, ‘I’m using them at the perimeter of the property.’

‘Because of the murder?’ I pressed. ‘Or have there been other problems?’

He took a step backward. ‘No problems here on the farm. Just being proactive.’ He turned toward the barn. ‘Holler if you need anything.’

He strode away, faster than he usually walked.

‘What do you think, Hamish?’ I asked the donkey as I ran the comb through his short mane one last time.

He swished his tail.

I sighed. ‘I know. He’s hiding something. I just hope it’s not something terrible.’

I finished up with the donkeys and then returned to the farmhouse and changed into clean clothes. I had a phone meeting scheduled for the afternoon to talk about script rewrites and I wanted to start brainstorming for a new project, but I decided to take the dogs down to the beach before I got started. They’d followed me around the farm all morning, but that didn’t burn off their energy the same way as running along the beach would.

To save time, I decided to drive the dogs to the main beach, like I’d done the night before. I told them where we were heading, and they seemed to understand. As soon as I opened the farmhouse door, they burst outside and ran to my car. They waited impatiently, tails wagging, for me to open the back door so they could pile into the vehicle.

When I climbed into the driver’s seat, Fancy threw her head back and let out a howl of excitement.

I laughed. ‘Are you turning into a couple of beach bums?’

Flossie gave a woof that sounded like an affirmative response.

After we arrived at the beach, I walked at a leisurely pace along the water’s edge while the dogs bounded off ahead of me, sometimes on the sand and sometimes in the shallows. Unlike the night before, we didn’t have the beach to ourselves this time. An older couple walked two golden retrievers at the far end of the cove,
