Chapter twelve
"Sybil, dear, what are you doing here?" Miss Abigail was wearing her familiar house robe and slippers, looking thoroughly confused as she scanned the large kitchen. Arthur emerged from the shadows and earned a disapproving glare from her, clearly not a fan of house pets.
"Miss Abigail, you're in my kitchen. I'm going to turn a light on," Sybil reassured her.
She flipped the switch on the wall, and the single overhead lamp cast a soft, warm glow across most of the kitchen. Miss Abigail still looked uneasy, seemingly unsure of how or why she had ended up there. Embarrassment played across her face when she realized she was floating, and panic began to set in.
"Sybil, dear, what is happening? I, I'm floating! And why am I so opaque?"
"Miss Abigail, please, you have nothing to fear, and I'm here for you."
"I don't understand. Why am I here? How did I get here? What's wrong with me?"
"Miss Abigail, please, let's sit down, I will explain everything."
"Sit down? I don't even know if I can stand, let alone sit!"
"You can. It just takes some time to get used to."
Abigail nodded slowly, staring at her legs as she tried desperately to set herself on the floor. She was now aware of her ethereal state and swayed uneasily on the spot, struggling to regain her effortless balance.
"Come, sit over here," Sybil offered, reaching out to gently coax Miss Abigail to the floor. Unfortunately, her feet went right through the floorboards, causing her to gasp loudly. Sybil did her best to soothe her, worried that her panicking outburst might wake the entire house.
"I'm dead, aren't I? How did this happen? I've been so good about my health for years! And I've been active every day, went to the doctor every month, like clockwork. What happened, Sybil? Why am I like this?"
Questions tumbled out of her uncontrollably, and her voice grew increasingly frantic. Sybil desperately tried to answer as she couldn't afford for Daisy to enter the kitchen and spot her sister's ghost.
"Miss Abigail, please, focus on one thing at a time, and I can help you. Just walk as you normally would. You can do it. The Miss Abigail I knew was a strong, sometimes scary, woman. Remember that first and foremost."
Miss Abigail seemed to draw strength from Sybil's words. Slowly, she anchored herself on the floor. Tentatively, she lifted her foot, taking slow steps forward with Sybil by her side. After a few moments, she was walking about the kitchen on her own, occasionally testing the limits of her form by passing her hand through objects like the countertop or the hanging pots above her.
"Feeling better?" Sybil asked.
"Well, since I am dead, I'd say no, but I'm not feeling anything, physically. It is an odd sensation."
"That's normal. Although this is the first time I've dealt with a visitor I've known while they were alive."
"I see. So you've done this before," Miss Abigail surmised, moving slowly over to the rocking chair near the wood stove.
"Yes, and more frequently in recent weeks.
