Chapter Fourteen

Erica lowered the driver’s side window and shifted her position in the seat. She watched Kirby Delong through her windshield from the far side of the park that abutted the courthouse. It was just a green. A large, grassy area with a small stage used for various entertainments. Dotting the open block within the town were statues and memorials such as the one dedicated to those who had given their lives during times of war.

The largest statue was also a memorial. It was in recognition of the soldiers in a particular regiment of the Civil War. The members of the Teaberry community donated funds over a hundred years ago to honor those men. She stared at it now wondering how many times she walked past it as a child without noticing its presence or comprehending the significance.

In the distance was the imposing courthouse with dual spires. She could see them above the tops of the tall trees that offered shady spots at various points on the green. Kirby was on a ladder next to the courthouse as he tried one more time to eradicate the hornets that had taken residence high on the outer wall. Beside her Jerry’s fingers worked their magic on the keys of the on-board computer. Periodically he hummed a noise as he found something interesting or grew restless because he didn’t.

“Got anything?” It wasn’t the first time she asked.

“You’re thinking I would keep it from you?”

“Probably not at first, but now that I’ve asked you about a dozen times, maybe.” She leaned over to get a better look at the video he was watching. “That’s Tabitha’s car.”

“Which one?” He zoomed in on the parking lot of the daycare.

“No, zoom out. When all of the parents show up at the end of the day to pick up the kids, there isn’t enough parking in the lot next to the building. A lot of us end up parking along the street.”

“Okay.” Jerry zoomed out on the video. They both watched as another car drove slowly down the street in front of the daycare.

“That’s Michele. She’s looking for a parking spot,” Erica murmured. “Tabitha hasn’t gotten out yet. She’s checking her makeup in the rearview mirror.”

“Looks like Michele is doing the same thing now.”

“Yeah. I guess they want to make sure their kids recognize them,” she said wryly.

“I’m guessing it has something to do with this guy,” Jerry said as Chris’s truck pulled into the driveway next to the daycare. “Hey, did you notice the two women managed to find parking spaces on either side of his drive?”

“Yup.”

“Where’s he going?” Jerry watched Chris disappear inside his house.

“He walks over to get Kori after he gets home from work. His job has him outside a lot. You know those oil well tanks and whatnot you see on people’s properties? He’s the one that checks them and takes readings and whatever it is he does. It means trudging through muddy fields, briar bushes, and who knows what to get there sometimes.
