Chapter 36

Blue Lake Inn – Conference Room 6

Simone stepped back inside and left Celia and Denny standing in the vestibule outside the front door of the inn. The rain had turned to mist, and passing car headlights created a moving horizontal column of white light as they passed.

“Deputy Moran is going to the theater to wait for the coroner’s team. I need to get back to the station,” said Denny. “There’s already paperwork. Plus I need to contact the theater’s owners, and coordinate with the coroner from there. Assume you will let me know any developments?”

“I can handle the meeting,” said Celia. “Maybe it’s better that you’re not there. It’ll be informal, with some real angst, and some fake angst. We may not be able to tell the difference at this point, but it will be a start.”

Celia walked inside the inn as Denny headed to his patrol car.

Trey stood behind the front desk checking in a late arriver for Saturday’s war re-enactment. After the new arriver took his key card and headed towards the elevator, he said, “I heard about Arthur Taylor-Webster,” he said. “How awful.”

Celia asked, “The cast – what have you seen from them this afternoon after rehearsal?”

“Nothing unusual, really. Brenda Rae and the younger guy – Kyle – they left for a while then came back – like they were going for a walk. She had sunglasses and a baseball cap on, trying not to be recognized, I guess. There were some of her fans in the bar earlier, so word must be out she’s here. Donna Manning stopped into the bar, said it was for a nightcap. Chardonnay. I didn’t see Brandon Brant. Laura told me he’s on a ‘silence and solitude’ thing he found online, but from what she says he practices it randomly. Simone was in the business center on the phone. That’s about it. The problem is that people have been arriving for the battle re-enactment tomorrow and we’re on off-season staff, so I’ve been distracted. It’s been a bit crazy.”

“So you didn’t see Brandon, or Donna or Simone leave the inn after they got back from rehearsal?”

“Not out the front door. But there’s the fire exit, or they could walk out through the patio.”

“Okay. If you think of anything else, let me know.”

Trey pointed Celia to conference room 6. When she opened the door, Dale, Lorna and Joan were seated at the small table in the center of the room, watching a laptop. It looked like they had gathered there from a variety of Friday night activities. Dale was wearing striped pajamas under a denim jacket. Joan had on an old sweatshirt with a “Ticonderoga Sentinels” logo on the front and jeans. Celia knew this was her ‘cleaning gear.’ Lorna looked like she’s been out, with a maroon silk shirt and hooped earrings. She gave Celia her “I’ll tell you later” look.

Lorna said, “We’re watching an old highlight reel from Hourglass Harbor. We found something of interest already.”

Celia moved behind the others to look over Lorna’s shoulder.
