Chapter Eleven

In a back corner of Tomes & Tea on Monday, Jazzi adjusted the virtual reality goggles over her eyes. Last night she’d downloaded the cell phone app she needed to make the system work. The experience with the world atlas virtual reality would be amazing for an eight- to ten-year-old. She was witnessing images of continents appear before her eyes. There was also an interactive book and a kit where a child could actually dig up a dinosaur relic.

Although thoroughly engrossed in the experience, she felt a tap on her shoulder. Removing the goggles, she found Parker staring at her with a broad smile. He was dressed in black jeans and a gray Henley shirt with a picture of a boat and the words I’D RATHER BE FISHING printed above it. His dark brown hair looked freshly trimmed.

“It’s amazing,” she decided.

“I told you it would be.” His expression was smug.

Last evening when he’d dropped off the VR system for her to assess, he’d told her, “Kids and adults alike will be intrigued.”

“Your idea to set up a virtual reality station for customers to try is a good one. We could have a day of it. I don’t want to relegate floor space to it on an ongoing basis,” Jazzi explained. “But having a virtual reality event once a month might work. We’ll have to see how many customers we can draw in.”

“Once they use the system, they’ll want to try it again,” Parker assured her. “But you have to make clear they need an up-to-date smartphone to do it. The system takes a lot of storage space.”

Thank goodness she had Parker to walk her through the specifics. Not only that, last evening while they played with the kittens and the little rascals had climbed all over them, she’d explained about her visit to the police station and how bothered she and Delaney had been by it.

Was the detective going to investigate Joseph Covino’s family?

As Jazzi laid the VR system on a nearby bookshelf, Parker helped her disassemble it. “I came by for another reason too,” he admitted. “It might help you get clarity about the investigation into Brie Frazier’s murder.”

“What?” She was interested in spite of her warnings to herself to stay away from it.

“How would you like to play tennis some morning?” He asked it as if it was something she did often.

“Tennis? I haven’t played tennis since college. Why would I want to disgrace myself on the court?” She couldn’t keep the laughter from her question.

“You might have a good reason for dressing in tennis whites.”

She knew some of the resort courts around Belltower Landing required whites, though there were public courts too. That reason better be a good one.

“I know Andrea Covino,” he revealed. “She teaches beginners at the tennis club.”

Why hadn’t he told her this last night? Maybe because he hadn’t wanted to give her the chance to become more involved through his acquaintance with Andrea? “Are you a member of the tennis club?”

“I am. I don’t have to be sociable while I’m playing tennis.
