CHAPTER ELEVEN

We camped out in the lobby for the rest of the evening, but that woman never came back downstairs. My only guess is that she ordered room service and called it an early night. We didn’t see Sean Stewart or his sister either. After getting looks from Marissa for four hours straight, we finally went up to our room for the night. I barely slept, my mind too focused on Aubrey Grant and all the things that might have happened to her.

I wake up hours before Mitchell, and I use the time to people watch from the balcony. The pool boy is testing the water while another man, about ten years older, is vacuuming the bottom of the pool. The beach restaurant is buzzing with employees cleaning the tables for the breakfast crowd. There’s a tractor on the beach, raking the sand, and a few early-morning walkers are getting their steps in before the beach gets crowded.

The resort looks perfectly normal. But how is it possible that no one saw anything happen to Aubrey Grant? Unless she really was killed in her room. It seems unlikely, though, because Mitchell and I had just gotten here Saturday evening. I would have sensed a murder one suite away from ours. I know I would have. At the very least, I would have sensed the killer’s energy in the hallway when I stepped out of our room the next morning.

But none of that happened. If only I could find that woman who has Aubrey’s hat. I could read it and maybe see where Aubrey went Saturday night.

I let out a huff and rub my forehead.

Mitchell opens the sliding glass door and hands me a large to-go cup. “I figured you could use some caffeine.”

“I didn’t even know you were up,” I say, taking the coffee and sipping it.

“I know. I saw you out here and figured I’d surprise you.” He sits down on one of the chairs and pats the other.

“I should’ve gone to get coffee earlier. I’ve been up for hours.” When I don’t have caffeine right away, I risk a massive headache for the rest of the day. And since taking aspirin inhibits my ability to have visions, I avoid it unless it’s absolutely impossible to bear the headache without it.

“I think you’re putting too much pressure on yourself, Piper.” He always thinks that.

“I’m fine.”

“Ooh, it’s worse than I thought if you’re using the word ‘fine.’” He smiles and takes a sip of coffee.

“We have to find that woman today.”

“We will. Don’t worry.”

I can’t help but worry. I chug the rest of my coffee. “Ready to hit the beach?”

“You do know that not everyone plants themselves at the resort for their entire stay.”

“What are you suggesting? Do we rent a car and drive aimlessly around the island?”

He stands up. “No. We get you more coffee and some food so you stop being cranky. Then we give the beach a few hours before we check out other tourist attractions on the island.
