Chapter 16

The next morning, Susan headed to Westbrook Charter. She couldn’t believe Audrey and Richard had popped into Jonathan’s surprise party uninvited last night. Richard was just plain gross. At the end of the evening, Janet confided in her that Richard whispered in her ear that she “was a ten” and they’d “make beautiful music together.” Yuck. Right in front of Audrey to boot. She walked into Theresa’s classroom, where Theresa and Satin were sorting homework copies.

“Hey, Susan. Great party last night,” said Theresa. “Jonathan looked really happy.”

“He was. What did you think of the surprise guests?”

“I thought it was weird that they just showed up without having called you to say they were coming to New York.”

Satin said, “Who showed up?”

“My birth mother and her sleazy husband, who happens to be Jonathan’s brother.” Susan read Satin’s expression. “It’s complicated.”

“I saw on the news that Melissa’s purse was found. I wonder if the police have any new leads,” said Satin.

“I think they’re reconsidering the Chadwick’s house as the initial crime scene. They didn’t have any witnesses at first, but now they know the neighbor’s teenage son was home. He says he saw a truck pull into the driveway the night Melissa was killed, and it was shortly after Melissa pulled into the garage.”

Satin said, “What about Mr. Chadwick? Does he have an alibi? It’s always the husband.”

“He wasn’t in Mexico City, but he was out of town. I think he and Blair Cunningham bought themselves a little love nest in Puerto Vallarta.”

After the kids left, Susan, Theresa, and Satin organized the donated school supplies and stuffed canvas bags for the foster kids. Satin had spearheaded a supply drive at the beginning of the school year, and her students had decorated the bags with fabric paint.

“What you’re doing is touching,” said Susan. “I hope the students learn from the example you’re setting.”

“People donate school supplies for the needy at the start of the school year, but kids go through crayons and pencils more quickly than they realize. I always reserve some to dole out later.”

By the time they’d finished, it was late afternoon. Jonathan was out looking at houses again, and Susan offered to swing by the real estate office to pick him up. During the ride over, she tried to sort out what she knew about the murder.

Matthew has an alibi. Lynette said he was in Puerto Vallarta the night of the murder. Coincidentally, so was Blair Cunningham. Larry Frisina was at Westbrook Elementary’s open house, but he could have slipped out early. He owns a blue truck, and the Chadwick’s teenage neighbor saw a truck in their driveway the night Melissa was killed.

Melissa had some sort of proof that would threaten Larry Frisina and possibly his son, Chance. Matthew knows what Larry is hiding, but not where the proof is, or where it’s hidden. He looked for it in Melissa’s office. I suspect Jordan was looking for it also. Funny how quickly Melissa’s son came to her office to pick up her things.
