On her way out, Brenda stopped at the bakery to stock up on Danish pastry and black-and-white cookies. Since she was close to Hollywood, it wouldn’t hurt to interview the building manager while she was awaiting data from her rookies.

As she was searching for her credit card, a childish voice called her name. She looked up and saw Daniel, Hannah, Zoe, and a tall teenager, who had to be Josh.

Zoe ran over to her for a hug.

“What are you guys doing here, Pumpkin?”

“We just went to the auto museum,” Zoe announced. “I want a Ferrari when I grow up.”

“Josh,” Daniel said. “This is Detective Brenda Jordan, my partner. Brenda, this is my son, Josh.”

Brenda held out her hand, and Josh shook it. She could see Daniel in the shape of Josh’s face and his dark blue eyes. He’d be a heartthrob when he grew up and lost the pimples.

“I’ve heard lots about you. I hope you’re enjoying LA.”

“It’s great so far.”

Brenda glanced over at Hannah in time to catch an eye roll.

“We’re introducing Josh to some ethnic food he can’t get on the island,” Hannah said.

“I recommend the corned beef sandwich,” Brenda suggested. “It’s to die for.”

“You guys grab a booth,” Daniel said. “I want to talk to Brenda for few minutes.”
