Chapter 12

What she needed was a nice quiet night at home. Just her and the book for book club. She could read all the chapters for the week, call Marc when he got home, and then curl up in bed for some shut-eye. Ignoring the investigation for a few hours might help her see it all more clearly in the morning.

She had just settled down on the couch with her book in hand when her cell phone rang.

“Whoever you are, you better have a good reason for interrupting my evening,” she muttered, frowning at the unknown number.

Normally, she wouldn’t answer it but it was a local number.

“Hello?” she said, curious now about who was on the other end.

“Uh, sorry to bother you,” Meghan muttered.

“Meghan? Hi! No, it’s okay. Do you need something?” Harper asked.

“I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out. Watch a movie or something? I just…I don’t want to be alone right now. I think I need some sort of a distraction or I’ll go crazy. And you’re the only person who doesn’t seem to blame me so…”

Harper was quiet for a minute before she said, “Sure! How about I meet you at your hotel and we can go from there?”

“Thanks, Harper.”

“Sure thing. I’ll be there soon!”

Hanging up, Harper glanced down at her book and set it aside. She could always read later.

Quickly, she changed into a pair of jeans and a plain light blue sweatshirt. Then she headed out the door and hopped in her golf cart. All the residents had golf carts, with only emergency services being allowed to use regular vehicles. It kept traffic and accidents to a minimum while helping to preserve the environment on the island.

Driving through town, Harper knew a lot of shops were closed at eight o’clock at night. Even the ice cream shop that she hoped was open had already closed since it wasn’t the summer tourist season.

Meghan was staying at the Sparkling Bay resort, a high-class resort on the island that the rich and famous stayed at. It was known for being private and closed off from the public, which is probably why Annabel had picked that resort.

Parking in a guest spot, Harper got out and went to the reception, letting them know who she was there to see. She couldn’t walk straight to Meghan’s room without being buzzed through the very secure gate. She could always sneak around the rocky cove that was part of the natural landscape and out of the resort’s jurisdiction but that seemed a bit much for just a simple movie night.

Walking down the paved walkway that connected individual private bungalows together, Harper tried to think of what she could do to take Meghan’s mind off of things. She seemed like someone who was part of Annabel’s Hollywood world without actually being inside the bubble.

Lush fronds lined the walkway, creating even more privacy. Little alcoves along the walkway had wall-mounted waterfall features that trickled softly into pebbles at the base. It was like a completely different world than the rest of Marilee Island.
