Noah

As soon as I got home, I let Toby out to stretch his legs before we headed down to Cormack’s place together.

There is not a single part of me that will ever consider her new place my new home, nor do I have any plans to move into it. The fact it’s within walking distance to my cabin is both convenient and bothersome. Convenient because on a chilly night like tonight, I can head over without a lot of fanfare. And bothersome because Cormack Featherby is suddenly my new neighbor.

It was bad enough when Everett moved into the neighborhood.

When Lot moved in across the street from me, I felt like I struck gold. And I did.

I follow Toby through the gate, where he stops to sniff the water in the fountain.

“No way, buddy. No drinking,” I tell him. Not only is it slightly chlorinated, but there was a body floating in it not that long ago. I’ll have to figure out how to drain it. Snow is in the extended forecast. It needs to be done anyway.

The house is lit up like a jack-o’-lantern, and I give a slight knock before heading on in.

“Cormack?” I call out, only to find her in the massive living room already curled up on the sofa next to a crackling fire.

“Over here, Big Boss.” She gives a weak wave.

She’s dressed in a hot pink pair of sweats, and she has a mug of something steaming hot in her hands.

I’ll admit, I’m a bit shocked that she’s not sprawled out naked with a bottle of champagne at the ready.

Sweats? I didn’t think Cormack owned something so pedestrian. They’re most likely designer and cost more than my truck.

Toby runs over to her, and she quickly shoos him away.

“Call the beast down, Noah. I can’t deal with this tonight.” She swats at him until he curls up a safe distance away, next to the fire, and I’m tempted to join him.

“What’s going on?” I head over and land on the couch next to her. Her face is pale, her mascara is dripping down her cheeks, and I’m genuinely worried as I scoot in close. “Hey, whoa. We can do this another time. I can meet you at the bakery tomorrow, or I can head to the set and see you after you do your thing.”

She shakes her head. “I’m not shooting again until we head to Hollyhock. That is, if I can take it.” She shoves a wad of tissues to her eyes.

“What’s going on, Cormack?” I scoot in another notch and wrap an arm around her shoulders. I’ve never seen her act this way before. A part of me is tempted to get Everett on the horn. I may not have romantic feelings for her, but she’s one of my oldest friends—one of Everett’s oldest friends, too. Which explains why I tolerate so much of her madness. “Does this have something to do with Amber’s secret?”

“What?” she hisses as she waves it off. “The only secret I know of hers is that she was getting a fee of fifteen hundred a month for keeping her lips zipped.
