CHAPTER 12
Michael, Liz and Jared forwarded the terrifying call to Bob Salazar, and, reluctantly, to Seth Williams.
âIâd rather not get Seth involved,â Michael told Jared, âbut we need to make sure your phone line is monitored by the police. If he calls again, the police should be able to trace where the call came from. They may be able to do it retroactively as it relates to the original call depending on the equipment they have. In case they donât have the right equipment, Iâd expect them to call in some help from another department with better equipment.â
âIf Seth can be bothered,â Liz said.
âIâm hoping that having the whole world watching closely, as they will as soon as this hits the news, will give him the impetus to get to work solving the crime.â
Michael made the call to Seth, and to his credit, seemed to take it seriously. Liz didnât know how she knew, but she had a distinct feeling Bob Salazar had given him a good tongue lashing. Michael reiterated that Seth should seek assistance from another department to make sure the phone line was monitored.
Seth didnât make some smart-aleck comment, but simply agreed. He said he would put the full resources of his department on the case, and would immediately start an intensive search to look for the young woman the killer mentioned.
When he put the phone down Michael said, âHe sounds like heâs on the case.â
âLetâs hope so,â Jared said.
âAre you sure you want to stay here tonight?â Liz asked Jared. âAre you worried?â
Jared puffed his chest out and pulled his shoulders back. âIâm sure he wouldnât do anything to me. Donât serial killers mostly kill women?â
âItâs more common,â Michael agreed. âThough there have been male victims.â
âIâm more worried about this young woman heâs talking about,â Jared continued. âDo you think we should start a search party ourselves?â
âWeâll have to think it over,â Michael said. âSometimes, with serial killers, the best thing to do is keep everything quiet and away from the public. If the killer feels too much pressure, or like he might be found, he might kill early.
âOn the other hand, of course itâs good to have as many of the general public searching as possible. Also, if youâre not giving the killer the media attention they crave, they may just do something horrific so theyâll be guaranteed coverage. Itâs hard to know what to do. I donât know who will be making the call about everything going public, but it wonât be me.
âOf course, youâre free to speak to the press if you want to, because you were the one who got the call. But Iâd follow police protocol on this one. Weâre clearly dealing with a psychopathic killer who is very, very dangerous. One wrong move could be fatal.â
âAre you sure you donât want to come and stay at my Lodge?â Liz offered. âJust for tonight?â
âNo, thanks anyway,â Jared said. âIâll be fine. I donât want the killer to think Iâm in hiding and scared.
