An hour later they were back at the station and in an interview room with Shane Matlock, who sat nervously in a chair opposite the two inspectors.
âThank you for agreeing to come in.â Palmer undid the top button on his shirt and loosened his tie. âWe just have a few more questions.â
âWeâve been looking into Wendy Matlockâs finances,â Barrett began. âIt appears that you still pay a large proportion of the mortgage on New Barn. Is that correct?â
âYes.â Shane looked sheepish.
âCan you tell us why?â
âWendy and I didnât split up because we stopped loving each other. We just wanted different things. I knew she couldnât afford it on her own, so I carried on making payments. I didnât want her to lose the house as well as me. She didnât deserve that.â
âVery noble,â Barrett said with a hint of sarcasm.
âDoes your girlfriend know you are still helping your wife out financially?â Palmer rested his hands on the desk.
âWell, no,â he admitted.
âWhy not?â
âIt would upset her.â
âBut now that Wendy Matlock is dead that problem no longer exists, does it?â Barrett folded his arms.
âNo, I suppose not.â
âTell us again about the last time you saw your wife?â Palmer asked.
âLike I said, I saw her a few weeks ago when I went over to the house to collect some post.â Shane shrugged.
âWe understand you defaulted on your last two mortgage payments.â Barrett fixed Shane with a stare.
âThatâs none of your business.â Shane sat forward angrily.
âIâll think youâll find it is, Mr Matlock,â Barrett replied with a smile. âThis is a murder investigation and we are looking for a motive.â
âWhy did you default?â Palmer was keen to take a softer approach.
Shane put his head in his hands and let out a long sigh. âBusiness hasnât been great lately. It was killing me paying the mortgage and the rent for my place in Royston. Gemma wanted to stop working when she found out she was pregnant. She said she didnât want to be a working mother. I agreed it would be nice for her to be a stay-at-home mum, but I didnât expect her to hand her notice in to the salon as early as she did. I hadnât had a chance to discuss everything with Wendy.â
âWe found letters from the mortgage company demanding payment at the barn.â
âThatâs why I went to see her. She wanted to know what was going on,â Shane admitted. âI told her I couldnât afford to keep paying for the barn. I suggested she took in a lodger to help with the cost. Thereâs a big spare room. I also thought it might be nice for her to have some company.â He sounded genuine.
âDid she advertise for a lodger, do you know?â Palmer asked.
âI donât know if she did, but she said sheâd think about it. She didnât want to lose the house.â Shane looked sorrowful.
âI donât suppose she did,â Barrett said dryly.
âDoes Gemma know you were still paying for the barn?â
âNo.â Shane hung his head. âShe wouldnât have liked it, especially with the baby on the way.
