Chapter 20
âI feel plumb guilty, asking you to wait in the truck while we talk to Elsie,â Stella told Savannah when they and Manny climbed out of his cruiser in front of the Patterson mansion. âYou were such a good girl back there at the dig, that I hate to leave you all by your lonesome.â
Savannah slipped her hand into her grandmotherâs and looked up at her with understanding in her eyes. âIâve got a library book in my backpack, so I wonât get bored. Besides, itâs whatâs best for Miss Dingle,â she said. âWhen you talk to her, you want her to feel comfortable telling you anything that sheâs got on her mind. She might not want to discuss grown-up stuff in front of a little kid like me.â
âYou ainât that little, dumplinâ, Iâm sorry to say, and you havenât been a kid for a long time now. You had to leave your childhood behind way sooner than you should have, and I feel mighty bad about that.â
âYou donât need to. Iâm doing okay. Itâs just that other adults donât think of me as a grown-up. Not like the two of you do,â Savannah added proudly.
Stella looked over at Manny, who was tucking his car keys into his pocket and trying to hide a smirk. âThatâs true,â she told Savannah. âMost grown-ups donât know you as well as the sheriff and your grandma do.â
âI have an idea,â Manny said. âInstead of sitting in your grandmaâs truck, why donât you wait in my cruiser instead? It would actually help me out. That way, if the station house should try to call me on my radio, you can pick it up, find out what they want, and then come get me. Does that sound like something you might be interested in doing? I can show you how to operate the radio if you want.â
Many times, Stella had seen her granddaughter do a little dance when told something she was pleased to hear. But until that moment, she had no idea that Savannah was capable of doing a most impressive, sprightly, Irish jig.
Manny laughed. âI figured you wouldnât put up too much of a fuss. Come on.â He gave her a push back toward the cruiser. âIâll give you a quick lesson on how to answer a call, soâs you donât sound like a civilian.â

Stella and Manny were unable to locate Elsie in either her apartment or the mansion. The maid, who was mopping the main hallway, told them she hadnât seen her all day.
As they walked through the kitchen, heading for the back door, Stella said, âI wish weâd found Elsie, but Iâm not sorry we avoided His Honor.â
âMe either,â Manny replied. âI think Iâd be about as happy to see him as he would be to set eyes on me right now.â
âI figure heâs upstairs, stretched out on his bed, tryinâ to recover whatâs left of his dignity and composure.â
âToo late. After that vision of him on his
