Chapter 20

“I feel plumb guilty, asking you to wait in the truck while we talk to Elsie,” Stella told Savannah when they and Manny climbed out of his cruiser in front of the Patterson mansion. “You were such a good girl back there at the dig, that I hate to leave you all by your lonesome.”

Savannah slipped her hand into her grandmother’s and looked up at her with understanding in her eyes. “I’ve got a library book in my backpack, so I won’t get bored. Besides, it’s what’s best for Miss Dingle,” she said. “When you talk to her, you want her to feel comfortable telling you anything that she’s got on her mind. She might not want to discuss grown-up stuff in front of a little kid like me.”

“You ain’t that little, dumplin’, I’m sorry to say, and you haven’t been a kid for a long time now. You had to leave your childhood behind way sooner than you should have, and I feel mighty bad about that.”

“You don’t need to. I’m doing okay. It’s just that other adults don’t think of me as a grown-up. Not like the two of you do,” Savannah added proudly.

Stella looked over at Manny, who was tucking his car keys into his pocket and trying to hide a smirk. “That’s true,” she told Savannah. “Most grown-ups don’t know you as well as the sheriff and your grandma do.”

“I have an idea,” Manny said. “Instead of sitting in your grandma’s truck, why don’t you wait in my cruiser instead? It would actually help me out. That way, if the station house should try to call me on my radio, you can pick it up, find out what they want, and then come get me. Does that sound like something you might be interested in doing? I can show you how to operate the radio if you want.”

Many times, Stella had seen her granddaughter do a little dance when told something she was pleased to hear. But until that moment, she had no idea that Savannah was capable of doing a most impressive, sprightly, Irish jig.

Manny laughed. “I figured you wouldn’t put up too much of a fuss. Come on.” He gave her a push back toward the cruiser. “I’ll give you a quick lesson on how to answer a call, so’s you don’t sound like a civilian.”

Stella and Manny were unable to locate Elsie in either her apartment or the mansion. The maid, who was mopping the main hallway, told them she hadn’t seen her all day.

As they walked through the kitchen, heading for the back door, Stella said, “I wish we’d found Elsie, but I’m not sorry we avoided His Honor.”

“Me either,” Manny replied. “I think I’d be about as happy to see him as he would be to set eyes on me right now.”

“I figure he’s upstairs, stretched out on his bed, tryin’ to recover what’s left of his dignity and composure.”

“Too late. After that vision of him on his
