Chapter 13

On the ride back Ashley focused on the road while I enjoyed my cheeseburger and mulled over the autopsy results.

“Yup. Poisoning opens up a lot more possibilities for suspects.” I paused, waiting for Ashley to chime in.

I glanced over at her. She was still intent on driving.

I scrunched up the wrapping from the cheeseburger. “But I’m afraid Mac is still in the mix.”

I turned to see if perhaps her facial expression would give me a hint on her thinking. But her face gave away nothing, except her intense concentration on driving. Her gaze switched back and forth between the road straight ahead and the rearview mirror.

Exasperated by her lack of response, I let out an exaggerated sigh. “What do you think?”

She shot me a glance. There was fear in her eyes. “I think we’re being followed. That’s what I think.”

“No! Really?” I checked her face for signs of joking. There were none.

I twisted around in my seat. Traffic was moderately heavy, as always after the lunch hour.

“There are a lot of cars behind us. Which one is following us?”

“The silver one.”

My body tensed and I snuck another peek behind us. “Practically all the cars behind us look silver to me. Some are silvery gray, some silvery white, others silvery blue. Which one is following us?”

Ashley’s chest heaved as she inhaled and exhaled deeply. “The silvery silver one.”

I turned around longer this time to study the school of silver autos behind us and couldn’t for the life of me distinguish one from another to get to silvery silver.

I sighed. “Can you count back and tell me which one? Maybe I’ll be able to locate the one that’s following us that way.”

Ashley sighed loudly and kept her eyes on the rearview mirror for several seconds straight while she softly counted to herself. “I think it’s the fourth car behind us.”

I counted back. “I can’t tell what kind of car it is or whether it’s a male or female driver, can you?”

“Nope.”

“How long has it been following us?”

“I noticed it about five minutes after we left Wargo’s.”

We were coming to an intersection just as the light turned to yellow. Ashley sped up like the car in front of us and made it through as it turned to red.

Ashley checked the mirror and let out a wild hoot. “Yay. They didn’t make the light. I’m going to try and lose them for good now.”

“Drive to the police station. That’s what Jake did.”

“Okay. Good idea.”

We wove in and out of residential blocks.

I pivoted halfway in my seat. “No one seems to be behind us now. I think we’ve lost them.”

Ashley pumped her arm. “Yes! No Payne, no gain.” She turned to me and spoke slowly. “Like my last name, Payne. Like you can’t hurt me if you can’t catch me.”

I laughed. “Oh, I got it. As in no pun, no fun.”

We both giggled like the schoolgirls we were at heart.

She glanced at me. “No need to go to the police station now, right?”

“Right. No point now.
