I didn’t get an opportunity to speak to Jasper on the way back to the hotel. Mr. Hale was fairly buzzing with energy and stayed with us all the way back, talking about ways to fine-tune their runs to shave seconds off their time. We went our separate ways to change for dinner. I was certainly ready for dinner since I’d missed lunch and only had tea and cakes that afternoon. After the hike up to the toboggan run and back, I was famished. I intended to enjoy the hearty meal. No dainty portions for me.

I was seated at a table with Hattie and Rob, along with Jasper and two newly arrived guests. Mr. Blinkhorn rounded out our party. Hattie had been polite and had even smiled at me when we were seated, but I was glad I wasn’t near her. I didn’t want to encounter her white-hot temper during dinner. Across the table from me, Jasper was deep in conversation with a silver-haired dowager, discussing a recent play. Mr. Blinkhorn was on my left. Thanks to Vogel’s sharp observation of the dimple, I’d been able to greet my dinner companion by name instead of mumbling something unintelligible that might pass for an acknowledgment. He informed me that Mr. Lavington had arranged for another mountaineer to take over their climbing lessons the next day. He buttered a roll as he said, “Not sure I’m as keen on climbing as I was. I’d like to give the Cresta another go.”

“I could tell it was quite a thrilling experience for you all.”

“Have you ever thought of giving it a try yourself?”

I shook my head. “I’m to have a skiing lesson tomorrow, so I’ll stick with that for now. Perhaps you could put off your climbing lesson for a day or two and tackle the Cresta again.”

“No, couldn’t do that. Wouldn’t be sporting, after Mr. Lavington went out of his way to set it up, even after all that’s happened,” Mr. Blinkhorn said. “Old Smithers will do fine, I’m sure. But he doesn’t have the . . . zest Mr. Lavington has.”

“So Mr. Lavington is a good climber, then?”

Mr. Blinkhorn swallowed his bite as he nodded. “He’s the best climber alive today—excellent technique, but not plodding or pedestrian. Stylish. And he knows when to take a bit of a risk.” He let out a long breath and reached for his wine. “It is disappointing we won’t be able to climb with him.”

The next course arrived, and I turned to speak to Rob. “Did you enjoy the Cresta Run?”

He picked up his wineglass that the waiter had just refilled. “Yes, indeed. Can’t wait to do it again.” He set the glass down very carefully. The ruddiness of his complexion was heightened. It might have been due to the alpine sun, but I suspected it had more to do with the many glasses of the excellent wine he’d consumed. “Today the run was a little spongy from the sun.” He spoke the sentence slowly, carefully enunciating the words.
