Buckhead Ex-Police Chief Commits Suicide in Prison Following Indictment.

In a shocking turn of events, the former Buckhead Police Chief, William Jefferson, ended his life yesterday at Reidsville prison in Savannah where he was serving a twenty-two-year sentence. The tragic incident comes in the wake of Jefferson’s recent indictment on multiple charges, casting a somber shadow on a community still grappling with the revelations of his crimes.

Maggie sat back and tried to imagine how horrific this time must have been for Beth. Her father killed himself in the summer after they graduated from high school. But Maggie remembered that Beth had left school a couple of months before graduation, citing illness, and because Maggie had been so intent on her own plans after high school, she had not given it much thought.

She continued finding and reading stories about Beth’s father’s tragedy, even running her finger down a line of those friends or relatives who came to visit him when he was incarcerated. There were very few. Maggie noted that Beth’s mother had visited him the day before he killed himself. Maggie found a list of various relatives—Hendersons, Jeffersons, Lopezes, Daniels—but never found Beth’s name on any of the visitors’ lists.

As she sat back and stared at the decade’s old online articles, Maggie wondered if Beth’s mother had said something to him in that last visit that led him to give up all hope? She rubbed a weary hand over her face and glanced at the clock on her laptop. It was nearly three in the morning now and she was beginning to finally tire. Besides, what did any of this have to do with Christie? At least with Lisa, it was easy to see where Christie fit in, although killing Christie over what she’d done at the prom was almost as far-fetched.

Maggie turned back to her laptop. She and Lisa had plans to meet up with Antoine again tomorrow, but they had no leads. If she could just find some clue to point them in a direction! This time, she turned her attention to Christie’s social media pages and was surprised to see that they hadn’t been taken down. She wasn’t sure if disabling a deceased family member’s social media account was something the police could do or whether it had to be a family member. In any case, she scrolled to the Facebook post that Christie had made a couple of days before she filmed the last one in the hotel room with the unopened soda can behind her.

Although the post wasn’t geotagged, Maggie instantly recognized the photo Christie posted as having been taken in front of Le mur des je t’aime, just a short walk from Sacré-Cœur. It was a popular spot where tourists could be photographed in front of the wall on which “I love you” was written in 250 languages. The picture Christie had put up was of herself, alone, standing in front of the wall with a caption that read: It’s true what they say about the first cut being the deepest.
