As Danielle drove away, it occurred to Laurent that Danielle was so delighted to finally have grandchildren that she could no longer objectively evaluate anyone.

But one thing Danielle was not wrong about was the fact that—for all Maggie’s talk about how much she wanted Nicole to be here—she had been gone a lot lately.

He’d clearly been too focused on his problems with Frère Dominic. He would need to have a word with Maggie. As he walked back into the house he passed Jemmy who was coming out with a remote-control helicopter in his hands.

“Do not get that on the roof again,” Laurent said as he felt his phone beginning to vibrate.

“I won’t, Papa.”

He stepped into the house and answered the phone.

“Allo?”

“It’s me,” Maggie said. “I had a few minutes and thought I’d see what you were up to.”

“Where are you?” He could tell by the noises in the background that she was calling from some kind of office.

“I have a meeting. I told you about it.”

“You are leaving Nicole on her own too much. Come home.”

“I can’t. I have…business that must be dealt with.”

But Laurent was in no mood to be put off. As he made his way to the kitchen, he could hear the sound of the television upstairs.

Few things set him off more than the thought that one of the children was watching daytime television—even if that child had lived most of her life in the US.

“Nicole has come here to visit this family,” he said, “and you have taken every opportunity to be gone.”

“That’s not true! We all went shopping in Aix just yesterday.”

“You have been gone every day since she arrived.”

“I’m doing it for her! You saw her, Laurent. She was so upset about what happened.”

Laurent turned to look out the kitchen window. Jemmy had set his toy helicopter in the gravel drive to avoid the trees and bushes. Laurent watched his son walk over to the side of the driveway where some of Laurent’s hired workmen from the village had been repairing a broken placard by the front gate.

“You cannot undo what happened,” he said.

“I’m not trying to do that!”

“Yes. You are. Besides, Detective Moreau does not need your help. But your family does.”

“That’s just it! He does need my help. I can’t tell you how wrong he’s getting this whole investigation.”

“Enough, Maggie. That is his job. Your job is here with your family. If Nicole is feeling vulnerable then you need to be with her, not leaving her alone.”

“I make sure she’s not alone.”

“You mean by asking Danielle to come be with her so you can go to Arles?”

“I… that was different.”

“Or today when I came home this morning and she looked like she would burst into tears at the sight of me?”

“Did she really?”

Laurent could tell Maggie was losing steam. She must know he was right. It was not an easy process and after his conversation with Danielle, he could personally attest to that. But all in all, the truth must be faced. No matter how painful.
