FRIDAY LATE MORNING

It wasn’t long before I saw Sergeant Innocenti come running up the hill, closely followed by his boss and a pair of paramedics. Leaving the medics to look after Emmy, I went over to greet Virgilio and outlined what had happened. He and Innocenti listened closely, and both agreed that in all likelihood Dizzy’s trademark clumsiness had averted another murder. The uniformed officer’s radio crackled, and he came over to report to the inspector.

‘One of our cars is over on the other side of the wall now and they report that there’s nobody to be seen, but there are fresh tracks of a big vehicle like a van in the scrub at the side of the track. They say the wall’s about two and a half metres high, so somebody could easily have climbed it from the roof of a vehicle or even stood on the roof and fired from there.’

Virgilio nodded. ‘Good work. Get Forensics to take plaster casts of the tyre marks just in case. We need to compare them with the tracks found at the side of that road over the hill from Cafaggiolo.’

We walked back over to find that the paramedics had snipped the arrow off close to the entry and exit wounds and Emmy had been bandaged with his arm secured in a sling as a temporary fix. Sergeant Innocenti bagged the cut pieces and no doubt the remaining section of the arrow would be removed at the hospital under anaesthetic. Emmy was being accompanied down to the ambulance by the paramedics and I was relieved to see him walking. There was no doubt about it. He had been very lucky indeed – certainly a lot luckier than Donny Lopez.

Dizzy, Selena and Anna were still standing there alongside the producer, the writer and Scott Norris, all of them looking shell-shocked, although Selena still looked as beautiful as ever. Dizzy recovered enough to tell us that the other two principal actors, Charles Vincent and Duggie Ogilvie, hadn’t been needed this morning and so were out of harm’s way back at their hotel. I exchanged glances with Virgilio: back at the hotel or maybe on the other side of the wall?

I translated while Innocenti took statements and then the producer announced that filming was cancelled for the rest of the day. I went and spoke to him afterwards as the crew set about packing everything up again. He was obviously very upset; so upset in fact that he didn’t bat an eyelid when Oscar wandered over and nuzzled his hand. He even ruffled the dog’s ears in response.

‘What about tomorrow, Mr Lyons? Are you planning on doing more filming?’

He shook his head. ‘No, that’s it as far as exteriors are concerned. I would have liked to do a bit more, but I reckon we can manage with what we’ve already got in the can. We still have a few indoor scenes to shoot over the coming days, but hopefully there’ll be no opportunity for our crazy bowman to fire any more arrows at anybody.
