Chapter 12
Christine excused herself with a sad smile, saying she had to get back to work again. He remained seated and remembered that old saw about âtrusting your gut.â Something was off about her, and he continued to look out the windows at the landscape, trying to puzzle out what possible motive she could have had. After coming to no conclusions, he decided he would leave for the day and made his way to the sitting room. A tall man with slicked back hair and a pencil moustache in the room smoking a cigarette turned at his entrance.
âWho are you?â the man asked.
âI could ask the same of you,â Brendan replied with a smile.
They stared at each other a moment before Brendan stepped forward and put out his hand. âSergeant Halloran. Boston City Police.â
The other man hesitated a moment before putting out his hand. âGeoffrey Richardson. I heard about my father-in-law and wanted to make sure Rosamund and Rosie were all right.â
âDo you live in Boston?â
âNo, New York. I didnât get the news until Monday and had to wrap up some business before coming here.â
âDo you mind if I ask you some questions?â Brendan said, gesturing to one of the chairs in order that the other man be seated.
âI suppose.â It was only when he bent to put out his cigarette that Brendan noticed a suitcase behind him with an overcoat and hat draped over. The man looked up and gave a wry smile, seeing that Brendan had noticed the luggage.
âAlthough I never lived here, Libby was kind enough to offer me a place to stay.â
âHow well did you know Mr. Bauer?â
âQuite well. I worked for him at one point until he sold the company and the new owners decided to clean house. He was sharp, didnât miss a thing and was excellent at predicting how the markets might move.â
âThatâs what I heard from someone else.â
âThereâs even a crazy rumor that he cashed out before the Crash. It was a story he alluded to more than once and he even went so far one Christmas as to put a small gold coin in everyoneâs stocking.â
âA man who liked to be mysterious?â
âYes, but he also thought it was funny.â Richardson shrugged.
âSince you know of his business dealings, can you think of anyone who would want to do him harm?â
Richardson laughed. âWhen I said he was sharp, that word has another meaning. As in keep your eyes open all the time. Many may have felt he took advantage of them, but with enough resentment to kill him, I couldnât say. He had been out of the business world for more than a few years. That would be a long time to hold a grudge or to act on it.â
âIâve known of people who wait almost a lifetime until something sets them off.â
âI wouldnât know,â Richardson said, taking a cigarette case out of his breast pocket and offering it to Brendan, who declined. âIâm not that kind of person. Let bygones be bygones is my motto.
