CHAPTER 14
âThere is nothing so far removed from us to be beyond our reach, or so far hidden that we cannot discover it.â
~Rene Descartes

Daisy and Ruby showed up the next afternoon bearing gifts. Ruby held two disposable cups of coffee. Daisy held her own, as well as a tote bag slung over her shoulder.
Pippin greeted them at the door, but a movement at the lavender and teal house across the street caught her eye. Once again, sheâd swear there was a face in the upstairs window, but just as she was about to ask Ruby and Daisy if they saw it, the curtain dropped back into place. God, she needed to get a grip.
âWhere can we sit?â Daisy asked. She withdrew a yellow book from her tote. It was covered with illustrations of happy looking flower boxes, friendly bumblebees, and cartoony butterflies.
Everything else left Pippinâs mind for the time being. âYou brought it!â
Daisy bounced on the balls of her feet. âI brought it!â
Pippin led them through the house and to the back deck, which overlooked the Sound, just beyond the barrier islands. Sheâd bought a few pots, some potting soil, and had planted basil, cilantro, flat leaf parsley, as well as a few flowers. She had more she wanted to do, but had reined herself in. She had to work a little bit at a time.
Ruby and Daisy oohed and awed. The three of them stood at the railing for a minute, breathing in the salty air, looking down at the sandy beach and the clear blue-green water beyond.
âBreathtaking.â Ruby seemed to sigh the word as she tilted her head back and took a deep breath. âIâd live my life right here if I could.â
Pippin felt the same way. The Outer Banks was a sanctuary she was only starting to appreciate. Her grandparents had kept them away from the OBX, so her experience was limited. She hadnât been to Nags Head, or the Bodie Island Lighthouse. She hadnât seen the wild horses or the Wright Brothers museum. She hadnât been over to Topsail Island at the southern end of the Outer Banks. She would get to it all eventually, but right now she had Devilâs Cove and it was enough.
They sat down side by side on the hanging swing Grey had put up, once again with Pippin in the middle. Daisy placed the book on Pippinâs lap. âWe were pretty cute kids, I have to say.â She reached over and flipped the pages, stopping on one sheâd marked with a Post-it Note. Underneath the plastic overlay on the open spread were eighteen pictures. They depicted various scenes from a birthday party. âThis is when I turned six,â Daisy said. Her finger landed on a photo of her holding a plastic bat, mid-swing, a Disney princess piñata, the intended victim.
Pippin scanned the pictures, looking at each face in the groups of kids. Once again, Daisyâs finger touched the page. âThatâs you, isnât it?â
Pippin peered down at the little girl
