Maggie sat with the phone in her lap and stared at the sea, the busy Promenade de la Croisette was before her, the sounds of traffic a rhythmic hum in her ear. She had found a comfortable bench on the hotel side of the boulevard. The sun felt good on her face but several people walking by grimaced at her swollen and discolored cheek.
It didn’t make sense.
Etienne did not confess?
JoJo said he had. Was she misinformed?
Now that Maggie thought about it, how would JoJo have heard that? Surely police detectives wouldn’t let something like that slip—and JoJo didn’t know enough French to understand it even if they had.
So had JoJo lied?
Had Etienne even been at the murder site?
A sudden thought hit her: What if Yang and Jamison lied to her about Etienne being there? Was it possible Maggie was set up in order to frame Etienne?
In order to free JoJo?
Whoa. That is a twisted line of logic.
Roger told her the police had no concrete leads on the case but they were working the forensics and were hopeful that a picture would emerge soon.
She glanced at her watch.
Is there a time limit on this? As in, the killer needs to distract the cops just long enough for her—or him—to hop on a transatlantic flight out of the country?
And was that any of Maggie’s concern?
She stood and straightened her shoulders. It was over she told herself firmly. Her involvement—the extent of what she could do—was over.
She felt a sudden flush of shame as she turned back to the hotel. While it was true that Jemmy was fine now he could definitely have used his Mommy yesterday during what was a very stressful hour for him at the ER. Just thinking of it made Maggie want to cry. The thought of her brave boy, holding his Papa’s hand and trying to be strong…
But if she were really honest she’d have to admit that her presence would have made it harder for Jemmy. She waved away the voice of reason in favor of the much more satisfying feeling of sadness and guilt.
And anger.
Why hadn’t Laurent told her!? Why hadn’t he called her? But she glanced down at the burner phone in her hand and knew why.
Her anger dissipated as she began to climb the broad stone steps to the hotel entrance.
The fact that her son had experienced an incident that Maggie not only wasn’t a part of but had no knowledge of was not something she could accept.
At least not comfortably.
And it wasn’t just what had happened to Jemmy. Maggie knew she had seriously upset one of the sweetest women on the planet when she’d put Danielle off and there was nothing—not even a dead body or an attempt to right a slight to an old boyfriend—that was more important than that.
No, the bottom line was that when it came to the things that really mattered, Maggie realized she didn’t care if Bette’s murder was never solved. It had nothing to do with her. JoJo was free.
