Chapter 11

Lily wasn’t too disappointed when Leo insisted on sending one of his deputies to the county lab with the broken piece of pottery instead of letting Lily take him in the delivery van again. She had work to do at the bakery, and the first trip had been pretty boring and uneventful.

Still, she couldn’t keep herself from thinking about what was happening with the investigation. It also gave her something to talk about with Ava. Lily’s best friend stopped by between meetings, and Lily caught her up as she decorated a wedding cake.

“I don’t have long, so talk fast! I want to hear about this case you’ve gotten yourself involved in,” Ava had said as she carried the strawberry tart Lily had given her and a cup of coffee to the kitchen.

“How in the world do you know I’m involved in a case?”

Ava waved her off. “My client heard it at the hairdresser. Mrs. Fisher at dispatch has loose lips while getting her hair done. Some Walter guy called in to complain about a pair of “weiner dogs who made a mess on his porch.” Dispatch took the call.”

“My dogs did not make a mess!”

Ava grinned. “See! I knew it was you.”

Lily shook her head. Leave it to Ava to weasel that information out of me.

As Lily decided what embellishment she wanted to work on next, she shared what she could about Henry Carter’s murder.

“So, do you think this Walter guy had something to do with the murder?” Ava asked when she was done.

Lily paused piping the cake and shrugged. “I saw the pottery on his porch and pieces they found at the crime scene myself. If they weren’t exactly the same, they were very close.”

Ava frowned. “So, the guy meets with Henry in the greenhouse, whacks him over the head with a pot, and what? He takes the broken pieces home and sticks them on his porch? He tracks them home on the bottom of his shoes? He’s saving them for later to create a mosaic with? What murderer does that?”

“A stupid one,” Lily said as she picked up a fresh bag of icing. “Or someone who’s either not planning on getting caught or trying to hide in plain sight.”

Lily had to agree with Ava that it didn’t make a lot of sense that Walter would be so careless if he was the murderer. The bakery’s doorbell chimed and brought an end to Ava and Lily’s murder investigation talk. Lily looked out through the small window between the kitchen and the front of the shop and sighed when she saw Patty.

I wonder what she wants.

Patty was relatively quiet today. She was still wearing flower-covered overalls and a big daisy-shaped hat, but even it was subdued when compared to her normal getup. Something about the way Patty was acting made Lily feel as though something was terribly wrong.

Lily laid down the piping bag and walked out into the lobby to greet her. Ava stayed behind in the kitchen and continued eating her strawberry tart.
