Chapter11

The cold Shetland wind carried murmurs of suspicion as Miranda , driven by resolve and a feeling of need, faced possible suspects caught in the tragedy that befell Charles Drummond. Once a peaceful haven, the castle grounds now resounded with the dread of imminent conflicts.

Tom Brodie, a seasoned sea captain whose visage bore evidence of the trials of a life lived by the merciless sea, was the first suspect that Miranda met with her piercing and unflinching gaze. She was as straightforward as the leading edge of a Shetland storm as she approached him.

"Mr. Brodie," Miranda said, her voice betraying her concern, "you were spotted near the castle on the night of Charles Drummond's death. Would you like me to explain why you're here at this hour?”

Tom looked defiantly at Miranda as he narrowed his eyes to fight the wind. "I'm but a fisherman, lass. Was near the castle, aye, but it's no crime to roam these shores. What's that American woman doin' interrogating' honest folk?"

Despite the harsh reply, Miranda continued, "You were acquainted with Charles Drummond, weren't you? Have you had any interactions or conversations that could help us solve this mystery?"

A brief expression of uncertainty crossed Tom's face, and his wrinkled brows furrowed. "Aye, I've known him. Kept to himself, he did. He wasn’t one for idle chatter. But I'll tell ye, I had no hand in whatever happened to the old man. He was more of a ghost than a neighbor."

As the conversation advanced, Miranda picked up on Tom's subtle cues, feeling a secret truth just beneath the surface. As dark clouds gathered on the horizon, so did the tension between them. With unwavering resolve, Miranda set out to discover the truth about Charles Drummond's dying moments.

Sara MacAnn, a Shetland-based artist renowned for her surreal paintings and peculiarities, was the next person on Miranda 's list of possible suspects. There she was, in a chaotic workshop, surrounded by paintings that appeared to embody the wild nature of the islands, when Miranda spotted her.

"Sara," Miranda said with an air of mixed mistrust and intrigue, "I've heard stories about your link to the magical side of Shetland. Did the death of Charles Drummond inspire any dreams or visions in your artistic spirit?"

With a mysterious smile on her face, Sara looked at Miranda with eyes that mirrored the sea's vibrant colors. "Visions, ye say? Shetland speaks to me in dreams, lass. But Charles's fate? I knew not of it till ye mentioned. The waves don't reveal every secret."

Despite Sara's vague response, Miranda persisted in her investigation. "Have you and Charles ever had any private moments together? There may be a connection between his demise and events that took place in the castle's hushed halls."

"The castle holds echoes of forgotten tales. Charles sought solace in its silence, but the whispers of the past were elusive. If ye seek answers, lass, ye'll have to dance with the unseen." Sara said in riddles as she traced the outlines of an unfinished painting.

The stakes were higher with each encounter as Miranda dug further into the range of possible suspects.
