I ARRIVED AT RAM ROD Key around nine thirty. I was met at the top of the road by Leland and Sheriff Rogers. I had met the sheriff a few times. He wasn’t a bad guy, but I didn’t have much faith in him. He took over for Sheriff Toby Reynolds when he was murdered and fed to the gators in alligator alley. Toby had taken over for Sheriff Buck when he was killed trying to kill me.

“Some guys stopped at the Big Coppitt Gun Club this morning and bought some ammo,” the sheriff said. “They were gonna pay to use the shooting range, but there was a guy there who told them he had a range set up here,” he said, pointing down the road, “and they could join him and shoot for free.”

“Are they still here?” I asked.

“Yeah, they’re over there leaning on that truck,” he said and nodded toward three guys next to their truck. “Anyway, after about three boxes of bullets were fired the other guy left. They fired a few more boxes and then went to replace the target. That’s when they found the guy tied up behind the straw.”

“Do we have an ID on the first guy?”

“Tall, hat pulled down on his head, sunglasses and a beard. One guy swears the beard was fake.”

“Heavy or thin?”

“Pudgy. One guy said he thought maybe that was fake too, but the other two say it was real.”

“Not much to go on there,” I said. “Why didn’t they check the guy out a little better?”

“He had liquor and gave them plenty of it,” Rogers said. “They didn’t ride together and he kept his distance while they were shooting.”

Another dead end and Cody was looking good for every murder.
