Chapter Seventeen
Lying in bed the next morning, I was thinking again about Simon’s murder, which really seemed to occupy my mind. Being hit over the head sounded like something a man would do, at least that was my personal opinion. I needed to switch the focus and look at James Richards. Or maybe he hired someone to take care of Simon. I knew very little about Mr. Richards and wasn’t sure if I even wanted to approach him myself.
I could read the stories about his arrest and upcoming trial in the paper, but nothing would be as good as a personal interview. I wondered to myself if I could pretend to be someone and make it into his home to speak with him. He was out on bond, pending the start of his trial. I continued to contemplate my dilemma as I drank my coffee and I finally figured it out. I was going to pretend that I was a junior legal aide, going over his story. It would get me inside and then I could hopefully have a conversation with him.
I searched online and read a bunch of the recent stories that had been written about Mr. Richards. It seems like he had been a former financial planner and investment coordinator. He was accused of taking money that he was supposed to be investing and gambling with it. He had a history of being generous to the town, but I wondered if he was being generous with other people’s money. From the stories I read, his gambling had very recently gotten out of control, and people were starting to suspect that things weren’t quite right. Jillian and Simon had caught wind of this and the rest is history. The newspaper reports made everything seem very cut and dry. On the other hand, Mr. Richards seemed to have a loyal following in town. His supporters couldn’t believe that he could be part of anything so dishonest.
I went over to his home, a modest ranch-style home on a quiet tree-lined street. Mr. Richards answered the door when I rang the bell. He looked a little scruffy and in need of a shave.
“Mr. Richards,” I began. “I am a junior legal aide, and I’m hoping you’ll let me go over your case.” He had a bewildered look on his face, so I talked quickly. “Your case is still being handled by your legal team, I’m just trying to get some interviewing practice. Would you be willing to speak with me?” I asked with the best innocent look I could manage.
He rubbed his stubbled chin and nodded. “I’d love some company, I’m not getting out much these days.”
He opened his door and showed me in. His home was a little musty smelling, like a house that had been closed up too long. His living room was off to the left and a dining room off to the right. Both were dark with the heavy drapes pulled over the windows. He kept on walking
