Chapter Four
Cashing Margoâs check was the best thing to happen to me all month. Over two hundred bucks for just a few hours of work. Hard work, but Iâd never minded working hard as long as it paid off somehow. I needed to find a new bank and move my savings over somewhere local. But that would mean I planned on staying longer. I still hadnât decided yet.
I poked through the fridge and pulled out some ground beef and other fixings for tacos. Just as I was about to turn on the stove, something flickered in the corner of my eye. I stilled and turned.
Only to see Hannigan staring back at me with a shocked expression.
âNo.â Fear trickled down my spine. âNo.â
âWhatâwhat am I doing here?â Hannigan patted himself on the chest and face. âHow.â His throat worked. âHow is this possible?â
Telling him would give him too much information. I slapped on a shocked look. âYou canât be here! You have to go back!â
Hanniganâs eyes widened. His form flickered a few times before it solidified. âI canât.â
âTry again!â But I knew it was useless. This had happened to me once before, but I was able to easily banish the woman. Hannigan would be a little tougher. He was stuck here for reasons unknown, though they were likely tied to his untimely death. I was alot of things, but I was no investigator. Wading into a murder seemed to be the height of foolhardy. After the disaster of my life over the last several months, Iâd decided I was done with foolhardy. Levelheaded Kate. That was me.
âIâIâm sorry. I seem to be stuck here.â Hannigan floated above the kitchen tile, a miserable expression on his handsome face.
I chopped aggressively at the ground beef sizzling in the pan, trying to think of a way to banish him. The one foolproof way I knew wasnât working. I shut my eyes for a brief second and tried again to find his door. The same black presence loomed in front of me.
I sighed. âWe will figure it out.â This was probably a lie, but hope was the only thing I had these days.
âA change of pace is nice,â Hannigan admitted, looking around at my small digs.
I waved the wooden spoon at him. âDonât get used to it,â I muttered.
He floated to the floor. âWhere are we?â
âSame town. Different place.â I added seasonings to the taco mix, though I lamented my lack of cumin. I had a small bottle of taco sauce Iâd picked up at the store, though I usually liked to add that last. It would have to do. âCan you materialize fully?â I asked as I opened a pack of iceberg lettuce.
Hanniganâs brows drew together. âIâm not sure.â
âGive it a try. I could use a hand with the chopping.â
Hanniganâs mouth turned down. He sighed and flickered.
âConcentrate. Youâre in a safe place. No one will be able to see you but me.â
âAnd why is that exactly?â he asked as he concentrated. His form flickered,
