SEVENTEEN

The detective team arrived at Marly Brooks home just five minutes before the scheduled meeting time and parked on the driveway side closest to Charles Bingham’s house. They were hoping he might see them pull up and thereby expect to see them later, but he was nowhere in sight. They walked up the three wooden steps to the front porch of Brooks’ little home, which was badly in need of a coat of paint or stain. In fact, the exterior of the entire house was in an obvious state of deterioration. It seemed almost ludicrous to the detectives that they should be calling on the particular occupant as someone who could possibly be involved in a murder . . . it all seemed too improbable. There was no sound from the doorbell that Garcia pushed twice, so Garcia used his knuckles and rapped hard enough to make sure Miss Brooks could hear them even if she was occupied in the back of the house. “Frankly, I did not expect to see you back here again. You surely cannot consider me to be a suspect in the murder of Dr. Carnes, even though you know I hated the man for what he did do me,” Brooks asserted. “What do you want of me, anyway?” She showed no anger, just a tone of impatience.

Detective Reed answered, “You are only one of several people who have had an unhappy relationship with the victim, Marly, and we are required, as we have said before, to fully investigate each and every one. Eventually, we will probably have several other individuals to consider as suspects we don’t even know about at this time, so we are a long way from closing this case. In this work we often find that it is an associate or someone connected to one of the early suspects that end up doing the actual criminal act. We just can’t completely clear anyone until we have all of the cold hard facts. You may find it surprising and objectionable, but one of the things we still need from you is a sample of your saliva and possibly your blood. We have requested court orders for blood and saliva samples from other persons so that we can obtain the DNA numbers. If the
