ZOE

Hank, who had been camped out under the bushes for the entirety of the evening thus far, was my witness when I came looking for Cat. “She went in the tree,” he said with no hesitation whatsoever.

In my mouth, I was carrying a long red belt made of yarn. And something Moony found when he was doing his perimeter walk this evening. As soon as guests left the park, he made a sweep of the perimeter of our territory. He did it again in the morning before guests arrived. He’d picked up some sort of long, narrow tool and brought it to me, said I should show it to Cat. So now I was carrying both around like some sort of pack mule. The belt was dragging on the ground, and the wooden thingamabob was hurting my mouth.

“Tree, eh? Do you have any idea what she’s doing in there? Cleaning?”

He shook his head, and his tail moved in time with it. “She didn’t have her cart with her, or her sidekick.”

“Do you mean Gloria?”

He yawned. Yes, lying around all day was extremely tiresome, wasn’t it? “Yeah, whatever her name is.”

I knew the security people. They knew me. I’d been going into that tree since I was a kitten. It had been a long time, but surely they’d be happy to see me?

I’d just go in there and track Cat down. Give her the item she requested and the bonus item Moony found. And I’d finish telling her what Scar and Vinny reported before I was so rudely interrupted by a catfight.

There was a tiny window in the security area on top of some sort of industrial air conditioning unit. I didn’t know the technical term. I couldn’t see in, but they could see out. If I jumped up there and tapped on the window, they would let me in. That used to be our system, anyway. We’d have to see if it still worked.

I couldn’t exactly run over to the tree with all this stuff in my mouth, but I did my best to get there in a timely fashion. Jumping up on the unit also presented a challenge, but I rose to the occasion. I shook out my fur and pressed my paw against the window, letting my claws make a soft tapping sound.

A few minutes later, the door below swung open. Victory!

I hopped down and sashayed inside the security office, where all the bipeds oohed and awwed over my adorable furry self. It only took me a second to hear Cat’s voice, and I took off down the hallway, a few curious bipeds following me to one of the cubicles, where she was speaking.

Ah. It was Derek’s office. He wasn’t my favorite biped, but he did like me.

“Zoe!” he exclaimed as soon as his eyes fell on me.

I offered him a meek “meow” in greeting.

Cat whipped around, her jaw dropping open when her eyes landed right on me. “Oh my!” Then her whole face brightened when she saw the belt in my mouth.
