Chapter Ten

BACK HOME, UNDER THE night sky, Clara held out a cupped palm, concentrated and called a ball of Balefire to hover just over her skin. Not that the flames would have burned her, anyway. Just one of the perks of being a Balefire witch. Fire that heats but does not burn and feeds the magical soul.

Flipping her hand over, she rippled her fingers to send the ball of fire dancing across the knuckles, flicked it to her other hand and repeated the series. Like a living thing, the flames writhed and played over her skin, faster and more graceful with each turn of her hand.

“You ever get bored, you could make a killing in Vegas with that act.” Half joking, Mag snatched the glowing orb and set it hovering a foot off the ground, and expanded it to fire-pit size.

“Playing with fire is restful; it settles my mind and helps me focus.”

At the crook of Mag’s finger, a pair of lounge chairs reared up on spindly legs and marched across the patio stones to settle invitingly next to the fire. The sisters settled gratefully into the depths of the striped canvas, and Mag kicked off her shoes so she could toast her toes in the Balefire flame.

Moments of peace like this had been rare on the vine the past few days, and she intended to make the most of this time. She’d no more than breathed out a sigh of contentment when a fluffy white cat stalked out of the house and settled on her lap to purr loudly.

When another purr rose from the vicinity of Clara’s lap, she assumed Pyewacket had also come out for a cuddle.

For a good ten minutes, Mag banished all thought other than how good the warm flames of her namesake felt on her feet, and how nice it was to run tickling fingers under her familiar’s chin while he purred and stretched out long across her lap.

In another minute, she’d have been sound asleep, but Clara broke the silence, pulling Mag back to the grim reality that someone had died and they needed to figure out why.

“It all comes back to motive,” she said. “Who stood to benefit from Kevin’s death, or was holding a grudge against him? And why kill him now? What was the trigger?”

There would be no nap until they’d hashed out the details, so Mag gave in and started to list the possibilities.

“Skip got an instant promotion, and from what I’ve seen, didn’t harbor any love for Kevin. But, there was no guarantee he’d get the promotion if Kevin was out of the way, and it would have been easier to get the man fired than to kill him. Makes for a flimsy motive. And, to be fair, young Skip doesn’t seem to like anyone.”

Clara hummed her agreement and added, “I’d say the feeling was mutual. He’s not going to win a prize for his people skills. Someone in a Trek jacket followed Kevin down to the pool. Even without that piece of information, I’d have to peg one of the staff.
