Chapter Fifteen

Avery had been deep in thought for almost an hour after her father left before she finally snapped out of it. He had reminded her of a reality that she could no longer ignore. As much as she didn’t like what he had to say, he was right.

Avery took their dishes to the sink and then made her way back to her laptop. There, she continued to scroll through Oliver’s profile. It seemed that for the past few years, his posts had been solely about William and their falling out. It had become an obsession for him.

There had to be more to it. It couldn’t have just been an inheritance battle, could it? Avery had seen families go through it before, but she had never seen it to such an extent. Oliver hadn’t gone a single day without bad-mouthing his brother online. That took effort.

The further she scrolled down the posts, the more she learned about just how intense the struggle between the brothers had been. That’s when she learned Oliver had taken William to court over the money.

So, Avery opened a new tab and searched for any information pertaining to that court appearance. She found one small article. The article explained William had represented himself.

Oliver had accused William of doctoring the inheritance paperwork as he had been made the executor of the will. The trial wasn’t long. Oliver simply had no evidence to support it. All he had was a hunch.

It took little for William to win the case. In fact, it was listed as one of the shortest cases to ever have come through that courthouse. Avery chuckled at the thought of something so ridiculous happening between the brothers.

She imagined them shouting at each other across the courtroom.

“What a mess,” she whispered to herself.

She went back to Oliver’s social media profile and scrolled further up to see what he had said after the trial. As she expected, he started accusing William of further crimes. Oliver claimed that William and the judge were friends and that the judge had clearly been offered a cut of the inheritance money.

Oliver’s profile page read like something one would see on a conspiracy platform. He had what he claimed were leads and proof that he had clearly come up with on his own. He would post photographs of the judge, accusing him publicly of taking bribes.

The sun was starting to set, and Avery was only becoming more invested in the drama that was unfolding in front of her. So, she hurried over to her kitchen and poured herself a glass of cabernet sauvignon to keep her company as she continued her deep dive into the lives of the brothers.

She made herself a snack of crackers and cheese as well and put on some soft music. Sprinkles still slept deeply as she sat back down in front of her laptop. She read through Oliver’s rambling posts about how the justice system had failed him and how everything could be bought with the right amount of money.
