CHAPTER 14
âHi, love, itâs me,â Kelly said when Mike answered his cell phone. âI need to run some things by you, and I could use your help.â
âIâm all ears. How is it going?â he asked.
âDifficult, although I did have a pinot noir wine that you would love. Iâll buy some bottles and bring them to you. Let me give you a recap of what Iâve found out. Itâs a little different from most cases, because there is an upsetting emotional aspect to it as well. One that Liz knew nothing about when she asked for my help. I was the one who had to tell her, and it was very difficult.
âLetâs get started then,â Mike said. âThe sooner you can wind up this thing, the sooner you can come home. Rebel, Lady, and Skyy are nervously pacing around, wondering where you are,â he said referring to their three dogs.
âAlright. Iâll go with the case first. Hereâs what Iâve found out so far.â Kelly spent the next twenty minutes going over her meetings with Finn, Zoe, and the Jannettes.
âMike, if you could spend some time running those people through the various law enforcement sites I canât get into, Iâd really appreciate it. I know the computer in your office there at the house is set up to do that. Any chance you could do it tonight and call me in the morning?â
âSure. I worked late and just took a frozen casserole out of the freezer. Thatâs the extent of my plans for tonight. Iâll get on it as soon as we end this call. What else do you have?â
âHave you ever heard of a sheriff by the name of Dirk Kuyper?â
âYes, why?â
âHeâs the one who arrested Zoe, and I think based on what I just told you about the facts of the case, that he really doesnât have anything solid. It sounds like an arrest that isnât backed up by a lot of facts that will stick.â
âI would agree with you. And yes, I have heard of him. Actually, I met him at a conference in Portland last year, and I thought he was insufferable. He was so full of himself it was hard to be around him, and believe me, he could have cared less about me.
âThe man had one thing on his mind and that was where his next gig was going to be. He is definitely angling for something higher up than being a county sheriff in some rural county.
âHe spent the whole conference sidling up to anyone he thought might be important to him, and obviously I wasnât. The only reason I did get to meet him was that seats had been assigned for the day of talks by various law enforcement people, and he was seated next to me. I think the sole extent of my conversation with him concerned me passing him the carafe of water that was in front of me.
âDo I think heâd arrest someone hoping to get notoriety? Oh yeah, but the
