Clutching Klee to her chest, Lemon knocked on the door one last time. Just like it had a couple hours earlier, it remained unanswered. As she retrieved the key, her intense anxiety eased.

Seeing George again after witnessing his flared temper earlier that day was at the very bottom of Lemon’s to-do list. While she didn’t expected him to be home when she picked Klee and his paperwork up, the entire time she walked Klee and the other evening crew pups, she agonized over what would happen at their meeting when she dropped Klee off.

She now faced an empty condo once again. After closing the door and relieving Klee of his harness and leash, Lemon crept cautiously into the living room. The blanket that hung off the back of couch still featured a large wrinkle. The magazine on the coffee table still lay with its spine up and it open pages down. Klee’s squeaky toy still sat directly in the path to the kitchen.

Lemon fed Klee his dinner and refreshed his water dish. She left a pink sticky note stuck to the refrigerator to indicate what she’d done. Then she gave Klee a quick kiss and scurried out as if the empty condo might eat her alive.

With only Tilly to drop off, Lemon carefully drove the three blocks to Nancy’s house and hopped out of the van as if it had bit her. She scooped Tilly out of the back and practically ran toward Nancy’s door.

As she rang the bell, Lemon’s mind teased her with the vision of another empty house, another client she couldn’t lay eyes on. All part of the trauma of Jillian’s death she knew, but no less real.

Thankfully, Nancy threw the door open. Her bright smile and open arms as she reached for Tilly further slowed Lemon’s runaway train heartbeat. She assessed Nancy’s demeanor as she followed the woman into her living room. Nothing out of the ordinary here. Lemon let out a long breath.

“Are all the dogs dropped off? Can I get you a cup of tea before you head home?”

“You know, that would be great.” Lemon dropped into the recliner and leaned back.

Thinking she would have more time to process, Lemon shot up in surprise when Nancy rapidly returned with a teacup. “I was just making some when you arrived,” she explained.

Lemon thanked her and cradled the mug to her chest. “It’s been a long day.”

Nancy sat down across from her, and Tilly hopped into her lap. “Oh no. What happened, sweetheart?”

Lemon was happy to unload to the one person who best understood her pain over Jillian. It didn’t hurt that she held a strong belief that Nancy herself was not involved in the death. Not that Nancy knew Lemon’s friends had her on their suspect list.

“I had a strange interaction with George Nichols today.”

Nancy’s penciled-in eyebrows raised. “Oh yeah? Strange how?”

“He was very…gruff with me. Like angry. He’s always been very nice in the past.”

“Hmm. He was probably just having a bad day.
