Returning to her bedroom at the Forrester mansion, Rosa reviewed her notes. She considered this new information about Salvador’s daughter—did Francisca know about her? Miguel’s aunt didn’t mention her, but the question had never come up either.

Finding her bed irresistible, Rosa melted into her pillows, her eyes drooping shut. She knew she was in danger of a nap. Since returning from London, she hadn’t had much time to rest.

Her bedroom was sizable, more so than the bedroom she would share with Miguel, and the king-size canopy bed larger as well. She’d miss the roomy built-in closet—a North American invention that hadn’t made its way to Europe—and the attached bathroom. An oversized porcelain tub sat on black and white tiles. The walls were painted a soothing sea-foam green. Such a delight, soaking in bubbles after a long day of work.

Moving into Miguel’s smaller home would be an adjustment, but Rosa didn’t care. She loved Miguel and wanted to be with him, no matter what. She couldn’t wait until she could announce her legal status as his wife, and she hoped Mrs. Belmonte appreciated the sacrifices they were making for her.

Vivien’s stuffed bear, Cecil, was a new addition to Rosa’s bedroom decor, and oddly, Diego had taken a liking to it. He jumped on the bed, curling up between Rosa and the bear, his purring luring her into what she appropriately termed a ‘cat’ nap.

When Rosa awoke, she found Diego’s nose touching her cheek, his round furry body spread over her chest.

“I miss my husband,” she said to her pet as she scrubbed his ears. “Shall we go for a visit?” She grabbed a small suitcase and filled it with her things. When she was done, she placed Diego in his carrying satchel.

“You must stop growing,” she admonished, “or I’ll not be able to carry you about for much longer.”

Before she left, she scribbled a note for Gloria, telling her not to worry if she didn’t come back for the night, and slipped it under Gloria’s bedroom door. Quietly, she hurried down the long staircase, not wanting to run into any family members who’d raise a brow and require an explanation.

Once in her Corvette, she roared down the long drive, the hills of Santa Bonita to her left and the sparkling Pacific Ocean to her right. Rosa felt like a rebel, as she was about to commit the misdemeanor of spending the night with her husband against her mother-in-law’s wishes.

Like Miguel said when he pulled her into his arms, pushing the door of his house shut behind him with his foot. “What Mamá doesn’t know won’t kill her.”
